The appearance was a stiff dark brown close to black color with a cap of a little white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Slight lace.
The aroma had some sweet and roasty nuts strolling into some coffee bean roastiness and a light milk and dark chocolate contour in the background.
The flavor was moderately sweet with the roast complimenting nicely. Aftertaste was nice and sweet, just a touch of roast. Finish seemed nice and sweet.
The palate was between light and medium bodied with a good carbonation and ABV. Somewhat smooth along my tongue.
Overall, pretty nice porter that I could come back to.

Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 7.5

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a dark amber color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that slid off at a decent pace. Sly messy lace.
The aroma had some sweet to roasty nuts, light cinnamon, maple syrup, light honey, caramel/toffee malts and a light earthy hoppiness.
The flavor was moderately sweet through the previously mentioned aromas. Some cinnamon trickled in slightly. Aftertaste was sweet through the maple and honey. Cinnamon was slightly there. Finish was malty, slightly sticky.
The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine.
Overall, pretty nice brown ale that I could have again.

Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance was a ruddy burnt dark orange color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that swiftly fell apart. Sliding lace.
The aroma had some sweet to bitter floral and citusy hops up front with a pinch of white pepper and a sturdy caramel malt base.
The flavor was moderately sweet with a balancing spice of the white pepper. Aftertaste was the citrusy hops and malts. Not much of a finish.
The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine.
Overall, decent APA, not sure if the white pepper was intentional but I liked it.

Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 6 | Flavor - 6 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 7.5

Poured into a lager glass, the appearance was a ruddy burnt dark orange almost amber color with a two finger white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Light stringy lace.
The aroma had some sweet and spicy rye up front with a little bit of clean caramel and toffee malts steadying themselves into some dark fruits and a little bit of brown sugar. Light grassy hops.
The flavor leaned towards the sweet side initially indicating a delicate dark fruitiness playing underneath. Aftertaste was malty with the dark fruits. Finish was quick and malty.
The palate was between light and medium bodied. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, I liked it for me, but was wishing there would have been a bit more of the rye in the flavor.

Draught at the brewery, 4/14/17.
Clear, light-amber with a small, white head of moderate retention.
Caramel malts and base malts mix about to add light bread, honey and vanilla with just a touch of peppery phenol from the honey fermentation. Dusty, very light hops are almost non-existent and add a touch of spicy herbal character. No alcohol or flaw.
Very straightforward amber ale. The honey doesn’t lighten the body too much, thankfully and the beer still has a reasonably malty texture. Brown bread, honey, biscuit and very light spice with a touch of fresh herbs and yeast on the finish. Well-attenuated and quite drinkable. Very straightforward with no alcohol or flaws.

Draught at the brewery, 4/14/17.
Clear, though dark chestnut-to-dark amber body is topped by a medium-sized, dark beige head showing moderate retention.
Light cinnamon-like spiciness in the nose balances a rich, malty caramel and toffee character with light brown bread behind it. Fresh yeast lightens things and there is light red and yellow fruitiness lying underneath. No sign of alcohol or flaw.
Moderately sweet with sweet cream, toffee and light butter (not diacetyl) all giving a good malt base with reasonable complexity. What it doesn’t have is an overabundance of specialty malt character that is lacking the proper base malt softness; nope this thing is pretty soft and inviting for an 8.2% brown ale with spice. Speaking of spice, cinnamon and very light clove provide the balance here in place of hops (there may be a dusting of light herbal and mildly citric hops) and aren’t overdone in the least. At first sip, I thought it might be a tad too sweet, but as it warmed and breathed, it really came together. It actually dries out considerably on the finish and with the light breadiness from the specialty malt and acidity from the spice, leaves a lingering dryness that makes every subsequent malty sip that much more enjoyable. Very nice stuff, about as good as you’re going to get for a not overdone, Strong Brown ale.

Draught at the brewery, 7/16/16.
A bit more clarity than the base version, lighter from the coffee, with a dark amber-mahogany color and small, beige head that shows low retention.
Coffee is a bit dry and not intensely roasty, but very earthy and ashy. The lactose is much less prominent and while the cinnamon is still there, it’s folded in to the coffee notes. A bit of beaniness from the coffee, lightly stale at points but still some sweeter milk chocolate remains to balance.
Very dry and earthy in the flavor, with a rather diluted feel and flavor. Seems like they used very unconcentrated coffee with lots of water, because the beer just seems a bit muted and watered down. Still, it’s drinkable and all but I like the base beer much better.

Draught at the brewery, 7/16/16.
Dark, ebony body shows indeterminable clarity and is topped by a light tan/dark beige head, medium-sized and quickly receding to cover.
Well, based on the description, it sounds about as unappealing as I can possibly imagine. Cinnamon and ginger are two easily abused adjuncts and I’m not a huge fan of lactose (being easily overdone as well). But diving in, it has a solid caramel and milk chocolate character with very light milk sugar sweetness, requisite roast to keep things lightly dry and a horchata-like finish replete with tastefully done amounts of spicing. Definitely get the cinnamon but it’s not obnoxious. No alcohol or flaw.
Lactose begins the flavor, with milk chocolate right on its heels. Spiciness combines with soft roast and the sticky, lightly watery body actually helps lighten the beer. A thicker body/texture might actually cause this thing to come off to heavy/aggressive. Definitely grows on you, until the end of the glass, where I’m actively enjoying the sticky lactose and milk chocolate up front and happy when the spice and dry roast balances the finish. Pretty cool beer that takes a deft hand to not turn in to a complete mess/trainwreck.

Draught at the brewery, 7/16/16.
Deep auburn with a light mahogany and a beige head atop that is small and shows moderate to low retention. High clarity.
Fruitiness and spiciness from rye and hop is nicely apparent in the nose as lightly toasted grain character shows light sourdough but is quickly balanced by softer, honey-laden base malts. Clean, no alcohol.
Similar red berry/red fruit-like flavors in the mouth, with cream, grain and soft black pepper all working towards a grainy, lightly sweet finish that has nuttiness and herbal/floral hop notes, lightly. No alcohol or flaw. A bit low on the carbonation or perhaps it’s just a bit loose, but still a very competent, drinkable rendition.

Draught at the brewery, 7/16/16.
Medium amber with cherry-auburn highlights and a small, beige head that shows moderate retention. Medium clarity.
Wonderfully malty in the nose, with tons of honey-cream that sets up for a tart, earthy, lightly acidic rosehip character mixed with very light lactic acid and a good dose of salinity. Really nicely balanced and none of the metal or cheap lactic character that so many beers of this style have. No alcohol and no flaw.
Even better flavor, probably thanks to the supple, ultra-soft texture. But the attenuation is still strong and the salt and rosehips work wonders on the palate, balancing nicely as gentle lactic notes are felt on the finish. Low-ish but tight carbonation and biscuit and bread lingering along with the earthy, tart and lightly citrusy rosehip. Awesome!
