Dark Star Brewing Co.
Regional Brewery
in Partridge Green,
West Sussex,
England 🏴
Owned by
Asahi Breweries
Associated Venue: The Evening Star
Established in 1994
The Dark Star Brewing Company was born in 1994 in the cellar of a pub in Brighton. With a brew plant only marginally bigger than an enthusiastic home-brew kit the characteristic style of hoppy beers was developed and tried out on the willing guinea pigs at the bar. As with all the best ideas, the business was planned on the back of a beer mat, driven by a few beers and funded with money we didn’t have.
A few years on, well 25 years actually, we find ourselves in Partridge Green, just south west of Horsham, West Sussex, with a 45 barrel brewhouse. It’s all been a bit of a blur really. None of us really wanted to leave the cellar of the pub, but apparently more and more people liked drinking the same beers as us, so we needed to brew more…
What’s in a name…: The brewery is named after a song by the band The Grateful Dead, although if you have a heard a different story, use that, never let the truth stand in the way of a good yarn.
In February 2018, Dark Star was acquired by London-based brewer, Fuller Smith & Turner. In January 2019, Fuller Smith & Turner sold its entire drinks business, including The Dark Star Brewing Company, to Asahi Breweries.

440ml can from a B&M or Home Bargains (can't remember, it was bought a while ago). Poured into a Batemans (Good Honest Ales) UK pint sleeve at home with some cheese, lunchtime on 19th November 2025. Bright, pale golden body, white crust on top. Hoppy nose, slight farmyard ester or two, taste is bitter, just checked it's arse to make sure it's in date, it is (BBE Jan 2026). Just seems a bit 'harsh' and full on for a 3.4% ABV Session IPA that's in date! This is decent for a cheap supermarket can.

Clear golden/amber pour with a small, but stable white head. Grapefruit, amlt, grapes, some herbs - nice bitter finish. Decent stuff.

Cards on the table. Prize Old Ale has always been one of my top beers. In fact, when Marble got hold of some and matured it in barrels many years ago it became one of my top beers ever. It was stunning. I received this as a gift in Spring and I've decided (no idea why) that tonight is the night. Great pour and a head that will be there for ages. A huge aroma of malt, hops and a gentle and welcome sourness. The taste is malt and sour. It's not well balanced with an emphasis on the sour. Still bloody good but not in the league of the Marble take on it. Maybe I built myself up too much. Anyway, this is a big boy's beer with bitterness, richness and sour. Interested to hear other views.

Can at home. Nice light summer beer. It won't set the world on fire, but perfectly pleasant.

[44cl can from Home Bargains, Bracknell.] A pale amber pour with a tight white head; apricot aroma; big resinous hop taste from the beginning, then some stone fruit flavours and chewy malts; and a long resinous finish leaving a dryness in the mouth. A full flavoured, satisfying IPA.

440ml can. Poured a mostly clear light amber colour with a short-lived, frothy white head. The aroma is toffee caramel, woody hops. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a fresh, smooth, toffee, earthy, light piney, woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation.
