First up is the domestic Scotch Ale: Nagahama Roman Beer Strong Scotch Ale 8% A dark purplish brown with a light tan head. I served it in my thistle glass and it has a malty chocolate with sharp lightly boozy fruit notes (figs, raisins, etc.). Full bodied and silky smooth. The taste starts of with the fruits then gives you malt cocoa and ends with hints of smoke. This is damn good, possibly the best I’ve had from Nagahama that little dash of peat malt really raised it to another level. Really good value in the 370¥ range, it makes me want to pick up that 750ml brown ale soon (1500¥ price is why I didn’t get it yet). ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nagahama Hop Wave Pils 5% 370¥ from Liquor Mountain so about 50¥ pricier than the Unfilteredaster’s Dream. Deep gold with a good 2 of foam that leave behind a film over the surface of the beer. There are some sweet fruity & candyish hop notes, some bitting herbal hops but also a skunky earthy quality hiding underneath which I don’t care for so much. Pretty full bodied with a sharp carbonation and a somewhat slick mouthfeel in the finish. The taste is a bit bitter lime/lemon, some herbal bitterness, soda bread, sweet tarts and an ashy herbal but yet soapy character. Pretty meh. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at Takumiya. Seems they have a motivated new brewer here. Glowing hazy gold with a low head. Spicy citrus nose, wheaty, a bit funky (their yeast?). There is a touch of diacetyl, citrus and wheaty biscuits in the flavor. A certain roughness takes away from the result. Not bad.

750ml bottle, corked and caged, from Liquor Mountain. Pours a cloudy, almost mucky deep brown with orange tints. Very lacy head, not much of one really, with pronounced bubbles in the beer, however. Nose is rich chocolate and caramel malt, raisins, apple, Belgian yeast spiciness. Rich malt flavor is a bit nicer, chocolate fudge and raisins, again green apple (acetaldehyde I suppose), malty and rich. Body is big, soft, oily, silky. Could use a bit more carbonation though. Interesting but needs a bit more fine tuning. Plus at ¥1600 I could go for a real Belgian import and still save myself ¥500.

750ml bottle from Liquor Mountain. Rich malty nose, chocolate, caramel, cherry, strawberry, grapes. Nice fruit. Bruit, deep red with a high head. Sweet but not cloying, rich malts, fruits, raisin, bit of orange. Very British, somewhat like a strong Irish red. Best thing from them in a while.

Can at the ryohan in Kanasaki. Picked up in Kyoto. Pours totally clear yellow-gold with a frothy, pure white head. Pithy citrus in the nose, crisp pale malts, lemon rind, pine needles. Light-medium sweet flavour with sturdy piney bitterness, some grassy accents, citrus rind. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Finishes with further grassy bitterness, faint astringency, tangerine and lemon peel, grapefruit pith. A very decent IPA.

Hazy yellow, bit of white foam. Aroma is herbal and yeasty. Some sweet corn in the background though. Taste is sourish, wheat is there, some cloves and just a bit of banana. Sweetish and little metallic in the finish. Overall not bad but just barely making the mark.

Pours hazy orange, foam builds up fast when I pour liberally. Aroma is a bit tired - hops are there, not a bad balance but nothing special, really. Taste is again, not bad, has bitterness and malt backbone is showing - but it also feels messy and over-bittered.

Can from Seijo in Shinjuku station. Drank from the can. Sweet, candy sugar, malty nose with some light spice. Body is uber thin, with good carbonation though. Again sweet on the palate and not weizen-like at all. Borderline cloying, and almost like a witbier with sugar. Needs a lot of work. --- Beer merged from original tick of Nagahama WZN Special on 15 Jul 2016 at 20:08 - Score: 5. Original review text: Let me clarify its not bad, just not a heffe...somewhere between a wit and a weizen...thin and sweet...

A new release from Nagahama Roma Beer is their Nagahama WZN Special available at all Liquor Mountains. It's a cloudy light gold with a huge thick head of foam. The aroma is an eggy wheaty cloves. The taste is kind of rough grains with a sharp artificial sweetener flavor and raspy carbonation. Kind of a letdown though my wife seems to enjoy it enough. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
