Description
The Ashover Cider Company was started in 2011 when a group of friends decided to do something with the apples that were going to waste around the Derbyshire village of Ashover.

So a press was purchased and various cider makers were visited and interrogated and a cunning plan was put together. This essentially was to make a Derbyshire Cider in a traditional way using pure ingredients. It’s a very slow, labour intensive process but it’s very satisfying.

Family and friends were press ganged along with some passers by and the first few gallons made proved to be a great success. So we gathered more and more apples.

We have continued with the process each October, until we have got to the point where we now produce hundreds of gallons of lovely Cider each year. We have been supplying a very select collection of customers with our Ciders over these years and have appeared at beer festivals all over the country. We have never advertised and have really struggled to keep up with demand, despite increasing production each year, so in 2018 we decided to make much more.

Our Cider comes from 100% apple juice (please don’t take that for granted with most Ciders). We harvest all types of Derbyshire apples, from wherever we can get donations. We also bring cider apples from Herefordshire. We press the apples each year in October and November on a farm near Littlemoor in the Parish of Ashover. The juice is then allowed to ferment over the winter and spring to create our unique Cider.

Our Cider is a full juice Cider made in the traditional way using the yeast from the apples for a slow wild ferment over winter to produce a still, clear full flavoured Cider.

BIAB at Nottingham Beer & Cider Festival 2025. Cloudy orange colour, afew short-lived bubbles on top and aroma of apple, musty, funk hint. Taste is sweet, appley, juicy, fruity, caramel note, with hints of earthy acetic funk and some acidity. Medium bodied, low carbonation, medium dry finish. Quite drinkable

Bottle from Cromford Mills Cheese Shop. Orange colour. Sharp rhubarb, some buttery vanilla, definitely got the rhubarb crumble in here. There's a hint of tannic cider dryness, but it's mainly sharp - maybe too much so. Nail varnish remover emerges in the finish. Not great.

Growler from LCB. Pours a mostly clear gold with no head. A fairly fruity apple pulp aroma, skins, light funk and an almost dusty light spice. Taste has a nice fleshy apple and then a moderate sweet tang finishing with a semi drying light funk, wood and apple peel. Smooth mouthfeel with subtle carbonation. Very nice.

Bottle. Clear gold with brief white fizz on top. Aroma of fruity apples, cider vinegar, funk. Taste is more mellow than expected, quite fruity and sweet, some funk, occasional white chocolate note but that's probably just me!, light funk, drying apple skin note. Smooth medium body. Very enjoyable.

Bottle from Chester Beer and Wine. Pours clear gold with big bubbly white head, amazing retention for a cider helped by roaring carbonation through the middle. Aroma of fruity mellow apple juice, floral blossom, light funk. Taste of tangy apple juice, cores, floral notes, fairly sweet but quite dry through the finish with some bitterness, high brut like carbonation. A different take on a session strength cider. Very enjoyable.

Bottle shared by Dutchdrebus at tasting. A bit hazy yellow color, no head. Aroma is horrible: cat pee mixed with rotting flowers. Flavor is floral and sweet at first, then the horrible flavor hits you. Rotting flowers, sweetish moldy. Yuk. Undrinkable for me. Bleh.
