Sample draft @ 6de Gents Bierfestival 2015.

Occasional beer made for GBF, the regular Zipacna which has undergone the ’Eisbock’ treatment resulting in an ABV between 20 and 30%, according to Klaas (the brewer). Even at this huge alcohol strength, it bears a creamy, light beige, thin head which all but disappears after a while; colour is as good as black. Strong aroma, as expected and as usual for this type of ’beers’, much cocoa, raisins soaked in brown rhum, caramel candy, kalhua, whiffs of chili, coffee and sherry; sweet candied fruit in the mouth, thick and oily mouthfeel like a Pedro Ximénez sherry or something of that kind, chocolatey and coffeeish flavours, ending in a peppery finish which shows both the chili peppers from the basic beer and the expected booze; all things considered, the alcohol does stay remarkably mild though, at least as good or even better than in some other of these frozen ultra-strong beers I had before. Interesting experiment which has worked perfectly because of the qualities of the basic beer, sadly not intended for wider distribution.

(Thx! for sharing) Sampled draft @ Gents Bierfestival 2015. Probably closer to 30 % ABV than 20 % according to the brewer. Totally black, dark tanned head on the sides, surprising amount of head for the ABV. Nose is big on roast at first but also a lot of sweetness akin to coco puffs, cacao, chocolate, cereal sweet,… Thick. Taste is boozy thick chocolate syrup, sludge, warming in a good way if you take small sips, coco puffs, chocolate, basic coffee, chili is light in the back, oddly more present in this version, light cinnamon-like note mixing with the chili. Body is thick syrup, sludgy. Impressive, taste-wise a tad more impressive probably for me, I cannot imagine drinking much of this.

Draught Head reduced to greige rim, near-black beer. Alcholic bomb for a nose, icecream, cacao- and vanillabeans, and...? fusels? Caramelly, toffee, sweet & black chocolate, alcoholic sweetness. Alcoholheat², full bodied, envelopping warmth. Alcoholbomb, but not crude, and well worth trying.

Clear dark brown beer, small aery beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: overripe banana, sweet, dried fruits, caramel, malty, heavy, nice roast, almost like coffee. MF: soft carbon, full body, alcohol burn. Taste: lots of dark chocolate, banana touch, chillies noticeable, not too much though, dry and roasted. Aftertaste: bitter hops, cocoa powder, some chillies, sourish touch, alcohol, very roasted, nice stuff!

Bottle. Black pour, creamy brown head. Aroma of creamy milk chocolate, mocha and mild pepper. Taste is mild, with mocha coffee, milk chocolate, mild chili and a little yeast. Nice softly burning finish. Good chili ris.
