Pitch black, 1 finger chocolate head. Nose is rye malt, walnuts, a light sweetness. Really nice mouthfeel. Good taste overall. I don’t get any spice at all I do get some oak, some random sweet tastes, lots of chocolate. Decent stout and the Alcohol is well hidden.

Bouteille 33cl, bottled 25/09/2014. De couleur noire voire brune foncée, col blanc-cassé laissant un filament doré sur le verre. Arôme est malté, caramel, note de chocolat avec un bouquet du piment qui reste assez subtil. Ce dernier est accompagné par qcq effluves fumées et de fines notes de chêne. Palais est centré sur un malté prononcé accompagné d’une pointe épicée du seigle. L’ajout de Chipotle reste agréable sans être surfait. Reste une petite épaisseur en bouche avec un boisé de chêne modéré. Au final, et même après avoir laissé respirer la bière pour un certain temps, le profil du Chipotle reste discret alors même qu’il devrait être le pilier de cette bière. Personnellement, je préfère la version originale de Klaas qui me semblait plus accomplie et dont tant le piment que le boisé sortaient plus. Ici j’ai le sentiment de voir la version atténuée de l’originale et de ce fait une sorte de marche en arrière. Reste une bière plus que correcte et qui a le mérite de nous changer de l’ennui du paysage belge.

Bottle picked up at Dranken Geers, Oostakker, nr Gent, consumed at home Saturday 27th December 2014. Pours dark brown with beige head. A little cocoa on the nose also apparent in the mouth. Soft mouthfeel, smooth chocolate and also a dusting of cocoa powder, a little dark fruit skins add a tinge of twangy fruit and some crushed nuts complete the picture. It’s not bad but I was hoping for a little more. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3

Had this beer before as a homebrew and was very impressed by it than . Now rating as it is brewed commercially . Love the text on the label ! Pours black, fast fading grey head . Smell is roasted malts, in a full sharp way . Some peppers as well . Taste is bit bitter, some chocolate sweetness , full grainyness , roasted malts , slightly pepperish , but the balance here is magnificent ( perhaps even better than what I remember from the homebrew ) . Carbonation is good as well , not too high for once . Lovely intense taste . One slightly negative point, is that I miss the thick mouthfeel most US beers of this style have . On the other hand, this is only 8,5 % , so that deserves some credit as well . Head off , Klaas !

Bottle from tderoeck - Thanks! Pours dark black with a light head. The nose is a mix of all the flavors it aims to represent - the warmth of chipotle peppers with the clean vanilla permeated with the roasted malts coming from the stout. The palate represents most of the flavors. The first attack and impression shows a vanilla attack with the slight latte/coffee flavors appearing underneath. The ending showcases the slight spiciness of the rye and chipotle. Not overdone to give a large warmth but just a few slight sparks of warmth at the end.

Bottle shared at chriso’s pre-Christmas tasting. Pours brown with a creamy tan head. The nose holds toasted bread, very slight pepper, tangy dark fruits. Medium sweet flavor with a bit of milk chocolate, mellow peppery spice, soft roast, light bitter earth, dried berries. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Roasty finish with hints of cinnamon, dark malts, earth, cocoa, pepper, burnt wood. Not bad.

Bottle shared at chriso’s winter tasting 7/12/2014. Dark brown / black coloured pour with a a lasting dark tan head. Aroma is mineral earthy, nutty, powdered choc. Flavour is composed of musty tart fruit, little berry, soft roast, earthy roast dirt. Palate is semi sweet, high carbonation. Mineral chalky, nutty malts.

Specialty stout with a brown beige, creamy head with limited retention, colour black with ruby hue. Attractive aroma of coffee, bitter chocolate, raisins, meat broth, whisky, gingerbread, vanilla, red wine, liquorice, cinnamon and something undisturbingly sweaty. Dense sweetish onset, very chocolatey, candied fruit, orange peel touch, thick oily and somewhat powdery mouthfeel, tannins, long roasted bitter finish with indeed a hint of sharp chilli peppers as well as elegantly warming, bourbon-like alcohol and peppery hops. Very interesting, I’m a sucker for big stouts and this is a great addition to the Belgian beer landscape. Cheers Klaas!
