Description
Centuries of brewing tradition, the best ingredients and strict compliance with the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516 are quality that you can taste with every sip! The Rittmayer Brewery is one of the oldest breweries in Forchheimer Land. The family business dates back to 1422. The brewery even received its own coat of arms certificate from the Count of Kulmbach because of its good beer.

In spring 2012, our new brewery on the outskirts of Hallerndorf went into operation right next to our filling center. It is one of the most innovative medium-sized breweries in all of Germany.

Bottle online from Raynville Superstore: Pours a hazy light chestnut colour with a medium sized throthy off white head. Aroma is very smoky with bacon, caramel and faint hints of dark fruits. Taste is again very smoky with more of the bacon notes, caramel, some chocolate and faint dark fruits in the background. A touch of sweetness on the finish. Medium to full body, low carbonation and smooth mouthfeel. Very decent Rauchbier. Enjoyed.

Bavarian Hefeweizen from Rittmayer, one of the world's oldest breweries (allegedly founded in 1422 and therefore celebrating its 600th birthday last year), located in Hallerndorf, some twenty-five miles north of Neurenberg. Considering the sheer age of this brewery and its location at the centre of a style I have been appreciating for some twenty years now, it surprised me that I apparently had not encountered this one before... Poured in a Weissbier 'Vase', it produces a thick, very frothy, audibly crackling, egg-white, pillowy, very mousse-like, slowly retreating head and initially crystal clear, warm apricot blonde robe with 'old golden' hue and columns of sparkling rising up, turning into that lovely Hefeweizen mistiness with the sediment added. Very malty and spicy-phenolic aroma of toasted but unsalted peanuts, freshly baked crackers, apple peel, ripe pear, overripe banana but not too strong, clove, dried rosemary, ginger powder, dried apricots, wet cinnamon, oven-baked pumpkin, freshly cut grass. Fruity onset, crisp apple peel and sweet banana and apricot notes, banana ester not too dominant though, with a slight sourish undertone from the wheat; lively carbonation with minerally effects, lovely wheat-slick yet full mouthfeel, bread-crustiness and even something cracker-like under a smooth sourish and slightly soapy wheatiness, carrying onwards these lovely fruity esters to a more phenolic finish with outspoken clove effect along with subtler rosemary and cinnamon, before a grassy and floral hop bitter element sets in - yet remains relatively meek and mild, as it befits the genre. Something very thinly cooked-meaty (proteins) lags behind. Wheat slickness, fruity esters, clove-like phenolics and very high drinkability: this is indeed a very Bavarian Hefeweizen, but there are sweet-spicy and cracker- to even vaguely gingerbread-like malt elements too which sets this Hallerndorfer Hefeweizen (the label on my sample indeed says 'Hefeweizen' rather than 'Hefeweissbier' but who cares) a bit apart from the other great Bavarian classics in this style. It also carries a bit more grassy hop bitterness than I am used to, yet without entering Hopfenweizen territory (which in fact is a relatively very recent addition to the German Weissbier family). Characterful, colourful and distinctive Hefeweizen: a bit different from what I was expecting, but all the more enjoyable for it. I love a good Hefeweizen (or Dunkelweizen, or even Kristallweizen) every now and then and this one was a delight.

Thanks Moravius! Dark brown, beige foam. Sweet, fruity, with notes of chocolate, raisins, bitter finish. A bit unbalanced.
