Wow, here’s a surprise! Usually bottled English ales turn up boring, oxidized and dead. Typically we don’t get the more characterful of their beers. This one is an exception. Poured a true golden color with a big fluffy head, then settled into a nicely balanced ale. Spritely styrian hops were surprisingly citric in nature, with a lemon and orange zest character. The orange was perhaps a synergistic effect between the hops and some esters, and a biscuity/cookie malt base. Really well put together and a nice drinker.

Bottle, can’t recall where I picked this up from as its been kicking around for some time now. Pours dark brown/black with a thick light brown coloured head. Aroma of roasted malts and some coffee, taste was roasted and did have some chocolate and reasonable bitterness, but overall I found this to be a tad thin and lacking somewhat.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Very clear copper coloured beer with a thickish white head. Aroma was slightly hoppy but also bit malty with a noticeable toffee edge. Taste fairly safe, touch sweet, some malts and hops but not an exciting beer.

Bottle. Pours a copper colour with a longlasting off-white head. Fruity malty hoppy aroma with hints of grapefruit. Sweet malty and fruity flavor with some hoppy bitterness. Dry malty and a little watery finish with a bitter aftertaste.

Bottle: a golden colour with a white head which rapidly fades to a thin ring; slight carbonation; aroma of hops and malt; sweet honeyed taste with a slight bitter kick as an afterthought; refreshing and lively in the mouth.

Bottled. Deep red colour, small white thick head, which lasts long. Aroma is cinnamon, hops and caramel. Flavour is clove, hops, caramel, toffee and slightly wet burnt wood and roasted malts. Very pleasant Christmassy spiced brew.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. Attractive bright gold colour with a trace of white head; aroma has bready and citrus notes; taste starts with the citrus of a typical blonde, but is overtaken by the sweet caramel - more golden in style; pleasantly bitter and dry aftertaste.

66cl bottle. A clear amber beer with a soapy off-whte head; fresh grassy aroma; slightly burnt caramel taste leading to a herby aftertaste with a toch of honey. A good session ale.

Bottle at room-temperature: Pours a rich reddish-brown colour with a caramel head which dissolves to leave a ring around the outside of the glass; aroma of candied orange and raisin at first, taste is of fruit cake and banana - a weird combination, with a gently bitter and warming aftertaste. I’ve had this at cellar temperature before, and it’s definitely better having been kept indoors for a week.
