On tap @ Thomson’s Bar. Pours dark amber with a decent head. The nose has toffee and resin. The taste is of ginger biscuits and toffee. The palate is medium bodied with a thick texture and a tangy finish. Overall, a good bitter.

8th August 2026. Hand-pulled pint in my local Spoons. Dec 2009: Brown 500ml, bottle conditioned, poured into a vase shaped pint glass. You aren’t going to get a much darker beer than this, a true stout, Imperial or otherwise, jet black colour, with a tight tan coloured head on top. Liquorice hits your nose straight away, dark chocolate malts can also be found if you sniff well enough. Malty, hoppy and all mixed in with the overiding flavour of liquorice roots. Chocolate and coffee feel in there too. Full bodied and almost creamy and rich, but no quiet that opulent or delicious in its intensity. Easy to drink and a nice nightcap sort of drink, wouldn’t want a gallon, but a pint was just Dandy.

Best before July 2010, this 500ml brown bottle was drank and reviewed in April 2010. The beer was poured (twice) into a bulbous tulip glass (a stemmed Palm badged one). The colour was almost black, held up to the light source it revealed that it was really a deep, dark ruby red colour, a rich foaming tan coloured head sat proudly on top. The aroma was all about burnt/roasted malts, as was the taste once the beer was in the mouth. Rich, creamy and full of those malt flavours already mentioned, lovelly. Impressed with this, my second beer from Acorn. Not too sure about the rear label claiming chocolate, cherry and liquorice flavours, but I suppose if your tastebuds are finely tuned you might be able to find those flavours, I couldn’t, I just liked the beer!

Half at the square peg, Birmingham. Dark brown pour with a creamy tan head. Solid aroma and flavour of coffee and dark chocolate with a medium bitterness

Hand pulled pint in the excellent ’Crown Inn’ Oakengates, Shropshire; Oct 2011. The pint glass looked good, a deep, rich golden body not lager gold, this was fuller and depth. On top sat a full white head that later gave some heavy lacing as I downed the beer. Saaz hops gave it a citrusy nose, but didn’t infect the taste to much (I don’t like a beer to be too citrusy in the mouth), they did however give the beer a bitter finish compared to the more floral feel the brew implied initially. Thought it was going to be better than it was to be honest, looked fine but failed to excite or ignite my tastebuds.

Pint, hand pulled in the Cock Hotel, Wellington Shropshire:Oct 2011. Golden colour, almost lager clear, but not as clean looking, the thin white head lasted a while, but couldn’t stay the full distance, it became a wisp and collar half way down the glass. According to the pub clip it showcasing American Hops, no mention of which ones though: the smell was piney hop orientated with no malt aromas to be found. The taste wasn’t as hoppy as I’d imagined, the hops certainly made their presence felt, initially and as the mouth dried: it has a bitter feel to it, not overly so, whatever malt content there is helps to smooth out some of the hops control. Not a bad beer, tried it because I thought the brewery might have gone to town on the hops like a lot of the US breweries seem to have done, they haven’t.

Cask at Craft Beer C, London on 29th February 2012. Gold with thin dying head. Very grassy, fruity aroma then liquid is grassy hopped with subtle savouries. Grassiness in aftertaste which lingers on a light, dryish mouthfeel and light body. *** RE-RATING** Cask at Craft Beer Clarkenwell on 24th November 2012. Clear amber with thin white head and pattern lacing. Zesty orange and earthiness in aroma. Orange peel and grass in mouth. Sharpish, tangy finish, failrly smooth mouthfeel.
