La Trappe Trappist - Abdij O.L.V. Koningshoeven
Commercial Brewery
in Berkel-Enschot,
Noord-Brabant,
Netherlands 🇳🇱
Owned by
Bavaria Brouwerij (Swinkels Family Brewers)
Associated Venue: Proeflokaal La Trappe
Established in 1884
Within the abbey walls, Brewery de Koningshoeven produces Dutch Trappist ale. Still under the supervision and responsibility of the monks and still based on the inner conviction "to do good": part of the proceeds go to charities. These original principles provide La Trappe Trappist with the exclusive label "Authentic Trappist Product" from the International Trappist Association.
Between 1969 and 1980 the beers were produced under license by Artois (InBev). By 1999 the monastery had become a subsidery of Bavaria - Netherlands this resulted in La Trappe beers no longer displaying the Authentic Trappist Product label. In 2005 an agreement was reached by which the monks would take a more active part in the brewery operation and so the label was restored.

Finally tried this beer since Bavaria NV took over the monastery’s brewing operations - resulting in a steep downgrade. First, it’s not bottle conditioned, which is unforgiveable for an abbey ale. Muddy reddish-brown; estery, phenolic nose (bubblegum, apple, plum, raspberry). Very sweet palate - bubblegum again, raspberry & apple, caramel, brown sugar. Lacks texture, hop and yeast.

Golden color. Some cork in the nose (it's a 750ml bottle, corked). Weak body, some residual sweetness. Poor.

[2000-2001] Re-rate: I was VERY unfair to this beer in my original rating. I had a bit of a head cold, so that may have had something to do with it. This beer has a beautiful head and a dark amber color, with an aroma rich with fruits of all kinds. It has a very full body with a malty and sweet flavor. I still taste a lot of fruit and chocolate in this one, but I find it more pleasant this time. The alcohol content is very well masked. Original rate: 3 - The aroma of this beer is dominated by fruit (raisins, apples) and alcohol, which is also what is most present in the flavor. The alcohol presense swells gradually in your mouth, until your tongue receives a burning/cleansing sensation that I expect more from wine than from beer. There are some subtle notes present, though. Chocolate being the one I notice the most. It's pretty good, I guess.

Rerate: Orange color, slightly hazy. Beautiful thick lasting head. Aroma combined of malts, spices, sweetness, and candy bubblegum. Alcohol is present in taste, but not too overwhelming. Sweet malts, but in a triple style, not double. Bit thin, but definitely highly enjoyable! Original rate: 4 Very much alike with the Hertog Jan Grand Prestige. With 10% a really strong ale, nice dark-amber appearance. The hops smell good and the taste is strong, but the alcohol is definitely present.

Sampled draught at in De Wildeman, Amsterdam.
Amber coloured with rich head. Big nice flowery toffee aroma.- Richly malty, but not overly sweet and certainly not heavy. Just that lovely toffee flavours that lingers on and on. Yummy!

A cloudy orange beer with an OK head - but it disappears quit fast. It has a very fresh fruity and yeasty aroma with hints of alcohol. The flavor has an alcohol sharpness but is very pleasant fruity with hints of yeast. It’s a pretty sweet beer with almost no bitterness. The fruit taste lingers pretty long.

Rerate: Actually one of the better doubles i reconsider. Nice perfume of roasted malts. Still lacks some remaining palate, but for a commercial brew it is definitely very good! Original rate: Decent double, but it lacks some remaining palate.

A beutiful dark brown beer with a good head. It has the aroma of yeast and fruit - and is very fruity in the taste. It is missing something to round off the taste of fruit.
