Bottle sampled at Kulminator. Pours cloudy dull amber. Aroma of urinal cakes, nettles and peas. Flavour is over moderate sweet and a touch acidic. Sickly nastiness in the palate making me feel nauseous. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Overall, terrible. It starts bad with the aroma, but the palate is sickening.

Spelt-beer based fruit beer launched after the original Leirekens were restyled (in 2008) and trying to exploit the then-popular trend of combining different "wood fruit" tastes into one beer. This is based on Leireken Witte Spelt and uses six different extracts of red and dark fruits. Light pink head over a deep ruby red, hazy beer. Artificial aroma of red fruit jam, grenadine, pomegranate, elderberry coughing syrup, sour cherry a bit less pronunciated, sourish spelt, some spicy hints (pepper, ginger). Fruit sweet taste, artificial but still on an acceptable level, but sugary cloying, drying in the finish with a light acidity, but everything remains dominated by the fruit extracts. I never liked witbier-based fruit beers and spelt beer to me is usually just a variation on witbier, so...

Spelt beer in this series, intended to represent the ’witbier’ style but as a specialty grain, also tasted as Leireken Witte Spelt. Witbier-like with snow white, frothy head and golden blonde colour; fruity and yeasty, grainy, sweetish with the typical (but faint) spicy sourishness of spelt, weak citrussy touches. All in all a bit simple for this type of beer, but with a very high drinkability.

The dark Leireken, also with buckwheat, also tasted as Leireken Boekweit Bruin. Light beige, mousse-like head, dark chestnut colour, lightly cloudy. Sweetish caramel profile with weak spicy accents and buckwheat sourishness, bit tart, roasted bitter accent in the finish. Could (and should) have been softer to be truly enjoyable.

Rating concerns the original version brewed at Silenrieux; also tasted under its current name Leireken Boekweit Blond from Strubbe. Thick creamy head, pale amber colour, sweetish yeasty beer with light citrus touch and faint spicy notes, with a typical buckwheat sourishness, mild bitterish finish.

Decent fruit beer, at least the fruits taste quite real and not so artificial.

Bottle sample at Tripel, A’dam. Hazy pale yellow colour, white head. Aroma of grain, dust, hay, (buck)wheat, light-tart, some lemon. Flavour is light to medium-sweet, grain, wheat, light-tart, dry, lemon in the light-bitter finish. Light-bodied. OK, just bland.

bottle pours dark pink, pink head smells like heavy fruits, some sugar taste is very sugary , liquid sugar-water, with some chemical fruits ( cherry up front, but with a back of more fruit-juices . ) pretty damn arteficial .. no chemical-sprayed fruits were used . i can believe that , since i dont think ANY real fruit is used here . dont get me wrong, its not THE worst drink ever, but beer that dont taste like beer, i rate in order how much i apreciate it . as a non-beer-drink . and even than, this aint my favourite . its just to damn sugary, i’m sorry ..

33 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from Het Natuurhuis in Antwerp. BBF 4/10/2015. Appearance is lemony, citrus, fake golden with a soapy white head. Nose is lemony, soapy, fake sugary, banana, coriander, touch artificial, soapy, cheap lemonade,…. Taste is lemonade, coriander, artificial, sweeteners, soap, starch, corn, banana, wheat, bubblegum, fake lime,… This one of those crummy Belgians with alternative malts etc. that reminds me more of a bad lemonade than beer. Creamy wheat & banana body with high carb. Not a good lemonade or brew but consumable. Bottle says that the recipe is from 1830 but I am not buying that.
