Description
Looking for the real taste of Antwerp? Since 1833, there has been just one address: our Antwerp City Brewery. Because when people get together in Antwerp, they do so more often than not with a Bolleke Koninck in their hand. And that’s how De Koninck has become synonymous with Antwerp –and vice-versa. Every day, we work hard to uphold this proud tradition while also experimenting on ways to perfect and reinvent the taste of Antwerp.

Pale blond color. Simple ale (almost a Pale Lager…), the dry mouthfeel is lightly fruity and metallic; the only distinguishable characteristic is a fairly good hop note at the end.

Copper color, nice head. Simple but enjoyable beer, probably not really the aroma, but better the flavor, with a light maltiness, caramel, light sweetness and a quite strong bitterness.

I didn’t realise I didn’t rate this beer before. But at last ... here it comes. Clear amber body with an off-white creamy head which is good lacing and mostly lasting. Light bitter initial flavour, and moderately bitter finish. Soft, chalky moutfeel. Watery texture.

(This is an ORIGINAL bottle, with the original name - Cuvée Antwerpen 93. It dates from the winter of 1992-1993. The beer was conceived for "Antwerpen, Cultural Capital of Europe 1993". Cuvée is now tweaked into "Tripel".) Orange-amber beer, full of flunky, dark particles ("fine-filtered"!); big bubbles to small but dense yellowish head. Faint "biscuit" nose, grassy, cookie malts. Bitterish-sweet taste, like liqueur bonbons, nutty, touch of wood, faint sweet-acidic finish. Spicey taste remarkably cumin-like. Sharp, slightly burning finish. Well-bodied, slightly sticky mouthfeel. The beer has benefitted from ageing. I've always found the draught 'original' (amber) De Koninck to be superior to its derivatives - with the possible exception of the Winter Koninck.

(Original bottle, so 1 1/2 year old) Dark foxy-brown, slight haze; good yellowish head, fast gone. Grassy, slight spices, fresh(!) malt in the nose. Bitterish (German hops), with a lot of sweet and roasted malts. Roasted flavours, faint fine spices (nutmeg?, cardamom? cinnamon? garden spices?), cookies, slightly vinous. Medium bodied, filled texture, slightly slick mouthfeel. The Pagadder one-off was later expanded into the Winter Koninck. Agreable, both as a young beer and now.

11.2 oz. Best Before 9/17/2004. Pours a ruddy, sparkling bright reddish-orange. Looks magnificently colored except that it is as crystal clear as they come. Good light sand colored head that sits atop the beer all the way to the end. Aroma has lots of sweet fruit. Cherries, strawberries, brown sugar, gingerbread and cinnamon. Yeast in there as well, though it is quite dry and old. Flavor begins with a chewy round caramel-cherry flavor. Immediately following I get some good even belgian yeast flavor mixed in with some candi sugar. This almost get too sweet, but is saved by a big bitter hops assault. Wow, it's like a belgian style double IPA (though not that bitter). Still though, a good balance is created and the flavors are fruity and intense with a pleasing hops bitterness on the end. Mouthfeel is very creamy, but the filtration takes out the chewiness and makes it almost syrupy. Fortunately it has a decent amount of carbonation to keep it from being truly syrupy. Pretty good stuff, moderately complex, medium to medium full body.

Such a shame that they have retired this beer since I first wrote this rating. It was one of my staples on draft at the Sharp Edge in Pittsburgh. +++Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer pours a rich golden color with a small tan head. The aroma is fruity, sour and bready. The flavor is very yeasty, bready, sour and fruity. There is a bit of nut on the aftertaste. Fruit flavors linger as well. The texture is a bit harsh. A nice Belgian ale. On draft the flavors are a bit less pronounce and the texture smooths out nicely.

BB 5/1/2004 date. Poured a light orange, dark yellowish amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma of belgian yeast, yellow fruits and light hops. Also a dry papery/nutty aroma as well. Flavor has the typical belgian yeastiness, some lightly sweet malt, mild carbonation and a medium to medium light body. Dries out considerably so on the finish. A good belgian ale, but with little distinctive personality, if any.

Clear light amber coloured body with not head at all. Aroma of coffee, malt and some subtle spices. Astringent bitter flavour mixed with some carbonation and not much else. Aftertaste clean-malt and alcohol present-not recommended, but a good treat-my thanks to my good friend Jon for letting me sample this beer. I had this beer from a bottle at Chez Antoinette in Washington, D.C. on 05-March-2004.

I always think that I like this one more than I actually do when I taste it again. At least it is a fairly inexpensive Belgian draft at Sharp Edge but there it does not have that much else going for it. +++ Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer pours a neutral brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. The aroma is a mix of sweet and fruity and yeasty. The flavor is mild, with a dry sourness, a hint of nut and a yeasty almost bready taste. Hard to really get a handle on just what the flavor is. Pretty mild for a Belgian. The draft is about the same - maybe a bit smoother.
