Description
Looking for the real taste of Antwerp? Since 1833, there has been just one address: our Antwerp City Brewery. Because when people get together in Antwerp, they do so more often than not with a Bolleke Koninck in their hand. And that’s how De Koninck has become synonymous with Antwerp –and vice-versa. Every day, we work hard to uphold this proud tradition while also experimenting on ways to perfect and reinvent the taste of Antwerp.

At first it was simply De Koninck, then it became De Koninck APA, a confusing name, and since August 2019 it is Bolleke. So the beer is now named after the traditional glass for this Special Belge. Interesting development. After many years a retasting. Bottle 33cl. @home poured into a degustation glass. Brilliant clear deep amber colour, small moussy white to off-white head, good retention. Aroma light toasted malt, grain, caramel. Flavour medium sweet and bitter, malty, caramel, bitter hops. Creamy mouthfeel, average carbonation, malty sweetbitter finish, grainy notes, nice session ale.

Pours rather unclear amber. Nearly no head. Smell is full, bit funky (brett ) . Taste is full, tart, brett, bit smokey almost ( i only later found out this was aged in a barrel of peated whisky, so that explains it ) , caramel and sweetness true to the basebeer are lost. The blend of tastes really didnt work to me.

Pours black, no real head. Smell is intense on the apple side, barrel, mild booze. Taste is full, rather sharp, bit boozy. Rather dry. OK

Corked bottle, bought @ Morshuis in Albergen. Pale golden color, pours a huge head. A fine blend of malt and citric flowery hops in the aroma. Malty sweet, slightly perfumed yet firm flowery citric hopbitter flavor. Well balanced, pleasant ale. Slightly yeasty aftertaste with hints of peach. Well done.

Corked bottle. Amber color, pours a huge head. Caramel, flowers and a hint of mango in both aroma and flavor. Just a hint of citrus and flowery hops. Well balanced, with the characteristic slightly yeasty finish. Nice one.

Raspberry-aroma with caramel. Just a bit artificial. Very sweet, still hoppy flavor with raspberry and some alcohol. After tasting this beer I long for an original De Koninck, fresh from tap in Antwerp.
