Great Japan Beer Fest in Yokohama 2014. Nice golden orange color with a modest eggshell head. Resiny nose with aromas of grapefruit and citrus present. A little tart on the palate at first, then a bitter wave rolls in. Not much malt taste or balance for that matter. Slightly astringent finish.

On tap at watering hole in Yoyogi February 2014. Served in a shaker pint. Deep black with a very small thin beige head. Girl Scout thin mint aroma with a hint of vanilla and coffee. Creamy mouthfeel. A slight peppermint pepper finish. Really well done!

On tap at 2014 Fall Keiyaki at Saitama Super Area. I had what I thought to be reasonable expectations for this, but could not hang. Amberish brown color with a small light beige head. Strong aroma of cinnamon with slight hints of apple and persimmon. Maltiness present on the palate with a medium body and medium carbonation. Dry finish. Disappointing.

Great Japan Beer Fest 2014, Yokohama. Nice rich brown sugar color with a small tan head. Huge vanilla bean ice cream aroma with undertones of chocolate milk. Creamy, rich mouthfeel with a slight oily finish. The sweetness can be overbearing at times. Dessert beer for sure.

Pours dark, beige had. Leaves nice lacings. Aroma is full of smoke. Really fits with its name in that sense. Some coffee and sour notes also there. Taste is surprisingly weak compared with powerful aroma. Still, some bacon, sweetness, bit of roast and even hops but body is quite watery. I like it quite a lot, another "changed" beer from Sankt Gallen.

330 ml bottle. Pours nice golden amber, bit hazy, nice foam. Aroma has some fresh cut grass, bit of fresh baked bread, green leaves. Taste is quite herbal, citrusy and hoppy, even somewhat unbalanced as there are lots of hops for a relatively weak body. Closing to a session IPA or just nice and hoppy pale ale rather than usual IPA. Bit skunky hops, lingering bitterness. Still a good and refreshing beer.

Sankt Galen's new Valentine's beer - Smoked Chocolate Stout 6.5% It pours a reddish cola brown with a foamy tan head. The nose is smokey bacon & chocolate so it easily lives up to it's name. Med-thin body with a smooth texture. The taste is smokey bacon coated in chocolate fudge syrup. Very nice but I'd enjoy a fuller body. Really good for a new release. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Botte from Yamaoka. Medium smoke nose, chocolate, some cream and coffee. Deep black with a frothy, tan head. Tasty. Smoke, chocolate, coffee, roasty wood, a bit of fruit. A bit ligtt in the body. Nice stuff. Good bitter finish. Quite a bit of umami. More of a lightly but nicely smoky stout as opposed to a smoked beer.
