Description
Our name, Almanac, refers to the Farmer’s Almanac, a seasonality reference guide for farmers that has been published every year in the U.S. since 1818. Our motto, “Farm to Barrel”, was adopted to reflect our passion for brewing bold and sustainably sourced beers. Farm-to-barrel brewing is about selecting the best in sustainably sourced ingredients and using them to create beers inspired by the great brewing traditions of the world. We aim to create something uniquely Northern Californian.

Almanac was founded in 2010 by Damian Fagan and Jesse Friedman, two avid home-brewers who bonded over their mutual appreciation for California farmers markets. They set out to brew beers inspired by California’s rich agricultural bounty. After nearly seven years of partner brewing, we moved into our very own 30,000 square-foot production & aging facility located on a historic naval airbase on Alameda Island in San Francisco Bay.

Bottle to tulip.
Appearance: orange to copper color with a quickly dissipating head which didn't leave any lace
Aroma: tart and sweet nectarine fleshy and skin accents, vinous, vinegar, subtle grassy hops and citrusy tones
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas together in a sour to tart sort of way with a vinous sweet edge underneath; finishes with the nectarine sweet and tart notes
Texture: medium bodied, this is a sipper; plenty of sour to tart vibes acting harsh to the tongue
Overall: nicely done fruited sour ale worthy of more pours.

Bottle to chalice.
Appearance: dark red/mahogany color with a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: some dark fruits, some Belgian candy sweetness, but also some funky to sour accents with some earthy & orange pulpiness underneath
Flavor: melds the prior noted aromas to a fair sweet to sour and funky & tart quality; finishes the same way
Texture: medium bodied; good as a sipper, some smoothness but also a good deal of dryness
Overall: I don't see this as a Belgian quad, it's something like that but also seems to have morphed into something else. Would I have this again? I think so and it would probably be a good ender to that night.
