Description
Brouwerij De Bie came into being in 1992 in the hop gardens of the Belgian brewing village of Watou near Poperinge and the French border. It used to be one of the smallest artisanal breweries in Flanders.

In 1998, the brewery was acquired by Jos Tjoen, who modernised it so that it could expand. It soon became clear that the premises were too small for the planned extension and so, in 2001, he moved Brouwerij De Bie to a larger location in Loker but kept the name: Hellekapelle. And an entirely new brewery was born, one with an adjoining pub where people could enjoy a good chat with close friends over great beer. At the same time, they opened a beer boutique.

Because of the enormous success of regional craft beers, this location was soon far too small. So, in 2011, Brouwerij De Bie moved to a much larger farmstead in Wakken (Dentergem). What began as a craft brewery with 3 beers has today grown into a renowned brewery with 10 beers. But it hasn’t lost its artisanal qualities.

Pours a cloudy colour, quite a lot of sediment, nice aroma, some citric fruit in there. Nice spicey taste, tastes stronger than it is alcohol wise, good hop flavours. Good example of the style, nothing particularly unique about it, but it tastes nice.

Ruby red color, small off-white head. Rum, caramel, toffee, dark fruits and sweet malts in the nose. Flavor is not so sweet as aroma would indicate - there is some toffee notes but it is dominated by alcohol powers. Earthy notes, woody hops, nutty flavor ... maybe some honey notes ... sticky mouthfeel. Interesting, different Belgian beer.

Bottled. Murky rubyish brown dark colour with mediumsized beige head. Aroma is sweetish, raisins, alcohol and malts. Almost a bit barleywineish aroma in my opinion. Flavour is yeast, sweet malts, plum, alcohol and malts. Quite barley wineish as a whole, but still not quite as sweet. Very pleasant thing, easy to drink, and wellbalanced.

Bottle: Poured a hazy brown orange with a light white head. Aroma is so light I think my nose is broken. Taste was of acidic copper pennies.

Bottle picked up from Beers of Europe at the end of April. Pours hazy orange in colour with large head, aroma was of a slightly sour mandarin. Taste was fruity with some spices with a little bit of a tang. Fine but not quite the beer I’d hoped for.

Towering yellow-brown head leaving fine lace over near-black beer with red lining and some interesting blobs. Heavy, fruity nose, both with blackcurrant and with citrus fruit drops from the childrens’ sweet shop. Extremely estery-fruity laden nose, but not all natural. Bit of liquorice and very faintly lactic. Not sweet, dry, woody and liquorice flavour, even ink. Like a stout made from liquorice wood, with a dash of lactic acid and burnt malts. I cannot perceive other spices as indicated on the label, or it ought to be vanilla. Empty palate, definitely its worst feature; "false" filling by sugars. Despite a lot of weaknesses, it still remains a rather original brew. And very rare - BeerMania, indeed. I have reclassified it as a sweet stout, ’cause that’s what it is.

Bottle, picked up from Beers of Europe last month. What a corker this was, completely took me by suprise. Poured a dark, dark muddy brown with a nice off white slightly creamy head. Great aroma of dried fruits with some molassess and sweet malts. Taste was just sublime dried fruits such as raisins, dates jockey for position against a wonderfully warming trickling of port like alcohol flavour, there was also a smoothy creaminess which gave the whole thing an indulgent feel. This was almost like hooking your finger into a wonderful christmas pud’ laced with alcohol and topped with the biggest dollop of double cream, glorious, but now I want seconds.

Bottle: Poured a straw golden amber color with a carbonated off white cream head. The aroma is a fruit or floral smell with a hint of alcohol. Nice rich caramel malt flavor with a fruit aftertaste.
