Description
Brouwerij De Bie came into being in 1992 in the hop gardens of the Belgian brewing village of Watou near Poperinge and the French border. It used to be one of the smallest artisanal breweries in Flanders.

In 1998, the brewery was acquired by Jos Tjoen, who modernised it so that it could expand. It soon became clear that the premises were too small for the planned extension and so, in 2001, he moved Brouwerij De Bie to a larger location in Loker but kept the name: Hellekapelle. And an entirely new brewery was born, one with an adjoining pub where people could enjoy a good chat with close friends over great beer. At the same time, they opened a beer boutique.

Because of the enormous success of regional craft beers, this location was soon far too small. So, in 2011, Brouwerij De Bie moved to a much larger farmstead in Wakken (Dentergem). What began as a craft brewery with 3 beers has today grown into a renowned brewery with 10 beers. But it hasn’t lost its artisanal qualities.

Bottle: Poured a dark black brown with a tan to light brown color head. Aroma is a fruit filled with sweet liquorice candy. Taste is a sweet burnt malt, also has that candy style sweetener taste. Another original beer by Brouwerij de Bie which makes it interesting pick up to say the least.

33 cL bottle. Pours hazy orange with a huge white head. Aroma is orange fruity with slight herbal, yeasty and malty notes. Starts rather thin flavour, quite grainy and slight herbal. Gets a lot better once heated to 10 - 15 degrees celcius. Orange flavour with a light aciditýand citric note blending nicely in with the more mellow malt and yeasty flavours. Ends soft and slight fruity mellow. Nice.

33 cL bottle. Pours hazy dark brown with a huge creamy light brown head. Sweet roasted malt aroma with a light note of honey. Slight sweet into a more herbal and slight acidic finish with bitterness. Reveals some malty and yeasty mixtured flavour with a slight edge and some softness from the honey. Good but nothing really thrilling.

Bottle. The label seems nicked on ’03’. Aroma of ripe persica and armeniaca stone fruits. There is a bit of prunus domestica. [Ain’t Wikipedia and Google great.] It is something like the fruits have been cooked for jam. The color is orange gold, and the beige head tried hard but didn’t achieve much. Medium bodied; near creamy carbonation. Slightly bitter stone fruits, and the noble hop may be contributing to the refreshing amount of bitter. The finish is a bit caramel, more than balanced by fruit and hop bitter. Maybe they used peach skins. It’s not at all sticky, and it is very good indeed. Makes my mouth pucker and long for more.

Bottle: Poured a hazy almost floating ghost like tenticals in the yellow with a white foamy head, sounds of carbonation. The aroma is sour fruit. The taste was like rusty metal, very hoppy. Diffrent as like most Brouwerij de Bie!

Bottle: Poured a murky copper yellow color, with a foamy white head. The aroma is full flowery overwhelming to the scenses. The taste is a rusty spice with lots of herbal flowery attributes.

Bottle: Poured black in color with a thick creamy light brown head. Sweet fruit/berry with some malt. Sweet metallic cola like taste with a licorice finish. Not impressive for something marketed as a stout.

Bottle. A gusher leaving me with cloudy orange and no head. Light spicy nose. Metallic/clayish on the palate, a hint of fruit, rather thin. Meh
