Description
Brouwerij De Bie came into being in 1992 in the hop gardens of the Belgian brewing village of Watou near Poperinge and the French border. It used to be one of the smallest artisanal breweries in Flanders.

In 1998, the brewery was acquired by Jos Tjoen, who modernised it so that it could expand. It soon became clear that the premises were too small for the planned extension and so, in 2001, he moved Brouwerij De Bie to a larger location in Loker but kept the name: Hellekapelle. And an entirely new brewery was born, one with an adjoining pub where people could enjoy a good chat with close friends over great beer. At the same time, they opened a beer boutique.

Because of the enormous success of regional craft beers, this location was soon far too small. So, in 2011, Brouwerij De Bie moved to a much larger farmstead in Wakken (Dentergem). What began as a craft brewery with 3 beers has today grown into a renowned brewery with 10 beers. But it hasn’t lost its artisanal qualities.

Poured a dark black brown with a creamy light brown head. Sweet tangy caramel and fruit aroma. The taste was similar to the smell, but the diffrent malts allowed for it to change as it warmed up. Very complex!

Bottled. Hazy orange brown, small white head. Fruity-citric nose: a bit like in Finnish mead: lemon, raisins and brown sugar. Carbonated, a bit sticky sugary, but overall not really sweet, more like spicey and lemony. Some hoppy bitterness in the aftertaste (mixed with sugar).

Bottled Aug 2005. Hazy darkish orange, small tan head. Fruits, cardboard in the nose, a bit oddly dry. Starts very sweet (added kandi sugar here) the metallic taste is dominating. Quite sweet (and metallic) despite of being already almost one year old.

Bottled 11/98, dranked 05/06: Dark brown with reddish hew and a fine white head. Still lively carbonation and fine head. The beer was very filling in the mouth and was at first extremely sweet but then it got sour afterwards - plums and cherries. I had a rough time drinking the whole beer due to its strong sour and sweetness. Exciting! (Great to share)
