Description
Brouwerij De Bie came into being in 1992 in the hop gardens of the Belgian brewing village of Watou near Poperinge and the French border. It used to be one of the smallest artisanal breweries in Flanders.

In 1998, the brewery was acquired by Jos Tjoen, who modernised it so that it could expand. It soon became clear that the premises were too small for the planned extension and so, in 2001, he moved Brouwerij De Bie to a larger location in Loker but kept the name: Hellekapelle. And an entirely new brewery was born, one with an adjoining pub where people could enjoy a good chat with close friends over great beer. At the same time, they opened a beer boutique.

Because of the enormous success of regional craft beers, this location was soon far too small. So, in 2011, Brouwerij De Bie moved to a much larger farmstead in Wakken (Dentergem). What began as a craft brewery with 3 beers has today grown into a renowned brewery with 10 beers. But it hasn’t lost its artisanal qualities.

Bottle Tawny body. Off-white, fizzy head, which diminishes mostly. Nice lace. Pine, perfume, flowers, alcohol in the nose. Lightly sweet, lighty bitter initial flavour. Lightly bitter finish. Medium to fully bodied. Nice but not extraordinary.

Hazy brown ale with floaties and with a thick light moka head. Sweet maplewood and porto aroma. Intense sweet sugar candy with nice alcohol warmth. Light coriander notes in finish. Rich bodied and smooth creamy mouthfeel.

As all De Bie beers, parked here; but there’s grave doubt as to where the beers are currently brewed. Preposterously huge head, dark brown leaving shards of lace. Nose with liquorice, chocolate, chervil and dark malts. Speculoos (=specific kind of hard Belgian gingerbread), grapejuice, brown sugar, unfermented sweet worts. Tastes a bit like German Kraftmalz. Very creamy; full-bodied MF. As a sweet stout, more than acceptable. For the adepts of Imperial Stouts, however, this is going to be one hell of a letdown.

As all De Bie beers, parked here; but there’s grave doubt as to where the beers are currently brewed. Pale amber with greenish shine; glass-sticking bubbles feeding large, fluffy, off-white head. Flour-like, earthy and yeasty notes in the nose. Tad phenolic as well, and sucade. Some alcohol. Liquorice-dominated, toasted taste, honey - and malt extract, biscuits. Again alcohol detectable. Very sweet. Alcohol warming, burn also from other sources. Medium bodied at best. Phenolic, but much less obvious than the Blonde Bie. Sweet and alcoholic beer, bit aggressive.

As all De Bie beers, parked here; but there’s grave doubt as to where the beers are currently brewed. Very slightly hazy gold with olive shine; good white head fed by bigger glass-sticking bubbles. Spicey, perfumed, phenolic nose, bits of coriander, celery, rhubarb. Taste is utterly phenolic, toasted, aggressive, clearly infected. I would guess some honey, and certainly spices, but I ’d be at a loss to say which. St. John’s Wort - or hemlock? Burning MF, light to medium bodied. Infected - which is consistent with reports from other tasters. Seems to be a permanent feature, I’m afraid this rating is quite relevant. The spicing is for...

A red brown beer with a fine light brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel, spices, rosehips, and honey. The flavor is dry and sweet with notes of loads of honey, but also rosehips, wood, and fruit.

Ruddy red-brown body, thin off-white head (really just a ring and an "island"). Light aroma of red wine, wood, and alcohol. Chocolatey body with dark fruit, a touch of spice, and a bitter finish. Very toasty and yeasty with a notable alcohol presence. Pretty nice flavor but the beer has a "dead" spot in the middle of the palate where it feels dull, flat, and old. That said, this is the best beer I’ve had from the brewery (I do realize that’s not saying much).

Amber color. Good one, maybe the aroma could be enhanced, but presents a very nice malt, caramel, spices taste (not sweet).

A caramel colored beer with a beutiful though disappearing white head. The aroma contains notes of spices, oranges, banan, and other fruits. The flavor is very sweet and spicy - especially coriander - but also notes of banana and peach. It has a dry hoppy end and the alcohol warms the tongue.
