Description
Brouwerij De Bie came into being in 1992 in the hop gardens of the Belgian brewing village of Watou near Poperinge and the French border. It used to be one of the smallest artisanal breweries in Flanders.

In 1998, the brewery was acquired by Jos Tjoen, who modernised it so that it could expand. It soon became clear that the premises were too small for the planned extension and so, in 2001, he moved Brouwerij De Bie to a larger location in Loker but kept the name: Hellekapelle. And an entirely new brewery was born, one with an adjoining pub where people could enjoy a good chat with close friends over great beer. At the same time, they opened a beer boutique.

Because of the enormous success of regional craft beers, this location was soon far too small. So, in 2011, Brouwerij De Bie moved to a much larger farmstead in Wakken (Dentergem). What began as a craft brewery with 3 beers has today grown into a renowned brewery with 10 beers. But it hasn’t lost its artisanal qualities.

The aroma is sweet yeasty, acidic, and corriander. Unclear light yellow with a small fast disappearing head. The flavor is wheaty, corriander, and yeasty with a dry end. A nice beer.

Bottled. Another four-year old bottle that has kept well. Nice dubel smell with scent of honey. Pours dark and bubbly, looks like a Coca-Cola, with sediment stuck to the bottom of the bottle. Taste full of sugar and honey. Malts are nicely dark, but not roasted. Sweet, but not cloying.

Ochre-pale amber; nearly no head after a few seconds. Cookies in the nose, sweet grapes as for making sherry with. Bitterish taste with a very outspoken cookie-crystal malt character. Bitterish-herbal flavour, not identifyable. Deposit gives it a very creamy, yeasty flavour. Medium-bodied; creamy, liqueurish finish. Nice, but this is a beer that is much better served very young. This sample is not overdue, and yet it is already quite subject to oxidation.

Golden color. Average aroma with some paper hints, pumpkin. Dry taste, again this impression of paper… Dry finish, poor hops, candy aftertaste.

Clear amber, but full of floating solid little tidbits. Very affirmative creamy head. Perfumed, spicy nose, choice malts, fine bakery (patisserie). Bitter-sweet taste, perfumed again, fuselalcohols and esters. I get some coriander too. Syrupy texture, but only medium to full bodied. Gets creamy with the yeast. How do you say this? A "beery" beer in the best top-fermenting way, very Belgian. Must say I quite like it.
