In 1998, the brewery was acquired by Jos Tjoen, who modernised it so that it could expand. It soon became clear that the premises were too small for the planned extension and so, in 2001, he moved Brouwerij De Bie to a larger location in Loker but kept the name: Hellekapelle. And an entirely new brewery was born, one with an adjoining pub where people could enjoy a good chat with close friends over great beer. At the same time, they opened a beer boutique.
Because of the enormous success of regional craft beers, this location was soon far too small. So, in 2011, Brouwerij De Bie moved to a much larger farmstead in Wakken (Dentergem). What began as a craft brewery with 3 beers has today grown into a renowned brewery with 10 beers. But it hasn’t lost its artisanal qualities.

(Bottle 33 cl) Reddish brown with a decent head. Starts very dry, but sweetens up slightly. Sourish cherry character - almost lambic-sourness, which of course it isn’t. Not the greatest Kriek. 140601

(Bottle 33 cl) Very unclear orange beer with a frothy head helped by an almost aggressive carbonation. Has both candy sugar and spices added - hard to determine which though. In spite of the sugar this is pretty dry with some fruity freshness from the nose and throughout. Almost Tripelish. 080601

Bottled (BB 01/2005)
Dark orange, good creamy off-white head. Nose has sweet berries: strawberry, cherries, some sourness to balance. Quite light malt profile. Hops and alcohol dominate. Yeast gives some sourness. Aftertaste is mostly alcoholic. Quite empty brew. (7/4/6/2/12 3.1). Re-rated, bottled Sep 2005. (5/3/6/2/11 2.7)

(Bottle 33 cl) Unclear, pale honey coloured with an almost whisky like aroma. But the hops overpowers everything else - this is really a bitter beer, too bitter for it’s rather light body. 110798

(Bottle 33 cl) Dark brown - almost black - beer with lots of candied sugar although it doesn’t make this overly sweet. Small but fairly stable head. Honey and spices are added - some cardamom perhaps?? Very roasted maltiness and notes of dried fruits - dates and figs perhaps to go with the season? 230198

(Bottle 33 cl) The name of this beer might hint at a honey-beer, but that is very far from the truth. Very dark brown beer with a nice, full brownish head with an excellent retention. Spiced but with what isn’t clearly detectable - apart from the candied sugars. Some dried fruits. But the flavours unfold slowly all the way through this beers as it warms up. simply gets better and better. A sublime experience. 170697

(Bottle 33 cl) Amber golden, with a tall, lasting head. A tripel-like dry hoppiness on a sweet, malty background. Yeasty, spicy notes with a surprisingly low amount of sediment. 210296
