Description
Daisen G Beer is a craft beer brewery located in Tottori prefecture, in the Chugoku region, just north of Okayama. Located at the base of Mt. Daisen, which is more commonly known as Hōkifuji in the area, the brewery opened in 1997 as an off-shoot of the sake producing company Kumezakura Shuzō and San-in Sanso Corporation, a company that deals with high-pressure gas. The local area is famous for its clear spring water, sourced from the snow at the top of the mountain, and its black soil, kuroboku in Japanese, which is said to be some of the most fertile in Japan. This fertile soil has resulted in Daisen G Beer being able to grow its own barley, in the form of Daisen Gold, in the spring; Daisen G Beer’s own hops, called Weihen Hop, which are harvested in the summer, and also Yamadanishiki, a sake yeast that is used in the production of the beers such as Daisen G Yagō.

Tap at Hopman. Very nice. Nice Belgian yeastiness, biscuity but some fruitiness too. Light spice. Not really IPA like, but I like it. Something almost a little sweet at the end

Keyaki. Nice dubbel aroma. Light roastiness, caramel. Taste is good, fairly authentic, ovaltine, dark fruit. One of the best beers of the day.

Tap at Wiz. Pleasant hop and malt aroma. Little bit fruity too. Touch of strawberry. Taste is the same light hoppiness. Bit grassy at the end. Alright but somehow missing something.

Tap at Beer Belly. Very very pale. Almost doesn't exist. Aroma is lemon, soapy, bit of Belgian yeastiness. Taste is good. Easy going. More Belgian stuff in there. Nice enough. Refreshing.

Bottle bought from the prefectural shop in Shinbashi. Dark brown colour with small golden head. Aroma is very interesting. Bit of roast as expected, some smoke, something savoury there, and a fruity boozy element. I can see the comparison that some people made with port. Ovaltine too. Pretty good! Taste is similarly interesting. Very smooth and easy to drink. That savoury element is there again, maybe a light soy sauce, can taste the malt, slight creamy sweetness. Finish is dark fruits then fading into a sweet malty finish. Really different from the usual imperial stouts we get here. Will definitely look out for this again.

Keyaki. Opaque, golden blond orange colour, small white head. Aroma is bit citrusy, maybe lime and a bit funky. Belgian saison like herbal elements and a bit of tripel sweetness. Taste is equally mixed. More saison like, quite dry, but with a lightly fruity Belgian sweetness. Quite grainy too. I like this. Possibly feels a bit boozy though.

Tap at CBM Jinbocho. 2012 version. Light sweetness, caramel, malty. Bit thin and unremarkable, but tasty enough. Not sure what aging has done.
