Draught at the Muddy Pig in St. Paul. Mild cherry aroma. Light red, and there is no head on this beer. Some wheat in the aroma, but mostly sour cherries. This is a very sour beer, and I suspect will be too sour for many. But if you enjoy a sour beer give this a try. However, don’t expect massive cherry flavor like you find from New Glarus or even in Bell’s cherry stout. Medium body.

Bottle, rated "live." Golden color pour, very thin head. Rather oxydized smell. It’s possible this bottle is past its prime. Seems more like German hops than anything else. Still a few of the usual Bell’s particulates floating around. Lightly fruity, perhaps like white grapes. Foregoes the excessive hop ballast of other APAs, so a comparison to any of them might be unfair. Also a bit carbonic. I like it, but not that much... but I’m willing to go get a fresher one later (I got this last October),

An amber ale in name only. Everything about this beer screams pale ale. Good, complex aroma. Citrus and hops, as well as dry grass. Orange, with considerable sediment in the bottle. Large, off white head. Flavor is light citrus and hops, with considerable sweetness.

Bottled, rated live. Pours a great deep brown body with a thick head. Good malty beer smell. Beer has the usual suspended particles in Bell’s light filtering. A great, sweet malt taste against which any hops don’t stand a chance. All they can do is keep the toasty malt from sticking to the mouth. Nice dry finish, as claimed.

Thanks to Sprinkle for sending this one! This poured a ruddy orange/brown color with a typically reserved Barleywine/Old Ale head. This is well done and would rate well on it’s own, but it was sampled along with several others and just couldn’t hold it’s own in strong company. Just lacked the intensity and deep lingering aromas and flavors of the others at the sampling.

Many thanks to walleye for parting with a bottle of this rarity! Murky orange-brown body with lots of yeast sediment, thin light cream head. Caramely, toasty aroma with subtle remnant hops, a bit oxidized. Mellow, full caramel and toast malty flavor with light buttery notes and hints of earthy hops, but these were mostly faded. Nice, tight carbonation for a five year-old beer. Still solid after all this time.

Bottled. Rated "live" as I drink it." Certainly the palest ale I’ve run across in a long time. Colored like a pale lager, with a big fluffy head. The usual suspension of unfiltered particulates, like in other Bell’s beers. Now this is certainly not in the same class as an Alpha King, but shuld it be in the same category? Can’t be sure. Plae malt taste is overwhelmed by big spicy hoppiness. It is pretty good. Just needs a little more balance. And there’s a kind of skunky smell that needs to be addressed. Perhaps best enjoyed in a cold ice fishing house.

Bottle: Poured a thick black color stout with a small dark brown head with excellent retention. Aroma mainly dominated by roasted malt with some subtle coffee and chocolate notes. The roasted malt dominates taste at first and then chocolate and coffee are also easily identifiable. Creamy texture makes this even more enjoyable. It all ends with some well balance bitterness. Body is incredibly full and there is even quite a lot of sediment at the bottom of my glass. Alcohol is well hidden which I always appreciate. Very good stuff indeed.

Bottled. Pours a nice ruby color. The expected malty smell with a note of hops I haven’t found in other Doppels. Taste is malty too, of course, with caramel, alcohol and a note of vanilla fudge. I thought it wasn’t overly sweet, due to hop presence. Finishes with a bit of yeast bite, stirred up as I grabbed the bottle.

This is a fine beer from a brewer that I have been growing quite fond of. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured super thick, black and oily with a medium sized dark brown head. The aroma is sweet, fruity, hoppy and has strong chocolate and roasted malt notes. The mouthfeel is exceptionally thick and creamy. The flavor is sweet, has a strong hop presence and follows that hoppy rush with a nice depth of malt flavors including bitter chocolate, coffee and toasted marshmallow.
