Description
At Brains we are proud to be Welsh & proud that we remain family owned.

Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move and the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened in March 2019.

Cask-conditioned at a JDW in Newport, Gwent. Attractive gold colour with a decent white head. Aroma of floral hops followed by flavours of biscuity malt and hay. Good.

Cask at the Redan, Wokingham, Berkshire. Deep chestnut with a cream head; malty aromas; interesting mix of fruity flavours - pear, apricot, sour apple and raspberry; and a dry finish. Interesting and moreish - but unfortunately served too cold on this occasion.

Cask-conditioned at the Highbury Vaults, Bristol. Amber coloured with minimal head. A slightly sweet and nutty aroma followed by a fruity flavour. Sour, somewhat astringent aftertaste which wasn’t enjoyable.

Cask handpull at Shakespeare’s Head, JDW, Holborn. It’s a bitter, some raspberry fruit is unusual, good condition, good lacing. Slight raspberry flavoured bitter. Very thirst quenching. Drinkable.

Bottle, picked up at Somerfield, Leominster. Decent crisp and hoppy beer, not too sweet and reasonable bittereness, quite pleasant.

500ml bottle from Franglais, Calais. This was my free bottle (buy 5 get one free, so I ended up with 8 scoops for €15 which I thought was a good deal). I’m not convinced that the bottled version is filtered as there is definitely some sediment in the bottom and it poured as a hazy copper colour. Thick lasting off white head. Slight yeast aroma. Some nice citrus hop too. Bit too carbonated. Nice yeast, malt, hop aroma balance. The bubbles are just too much. Quite a decent bitter, if it was on cask. I seem to remember having this at a Wetherspoons in Canterbury and liking it. Nice malts, reasonable fullness in the mouth.

Can on the train from Cardiff to Paddington. Dark golden colour with a moderate white head. Slightly fresh hoppy smell. Rather thin mouthfeel with a flavour containing elements of nuts, fruits and caramel malts. Dry, short lived bitter ending (03.02.2007).
