Established in 1882
Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move and the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened in March 2019.

Pint on well kept cask at The Albany (The Cardiff pub of the years 05 and 06, voted by CAMRA-members). We enjoyed some Brains-beers at this cosy and friendly pub while watching Liverpool-Everton on the TV screen.
Dark mahogany red-tinged body. White filmy layer leaving nice laceworks on the glass. Rounded malty aroma with some fruity notes. Well balanced mouthfeel with caramel malty flavour offset by dry hops and a bitter touch in the aftertaste. Smooth (03.02.2007).

Pint on tap, served chilled at The Goat Major, Cardiff. The beer was launced in October 06 as "an extra Cold Continental-style beer". Pale golden coloured body. Lasting white foamy head with some lacing on the glass. Aroma of citric sweetness. Taste like lemonade and juicy fruit. Fizzy and active carbonated. Should be very refreshing in the summertime (02.02.2007).

During a few days in Cardiff I had some pints of SA on cask at different pubs (Prince of Wales, The Model Inn and The Albany). Dark amber coloured. Small white head, but great laceworks. Fresh malty aroma. Light citrus fruits in flavour ending with a bitter touch. Very smooth (02 and 03.02.2007).

Half pint on cask at The Yard, city centre, Cardiff. Amber body under a fragile, white head blanketing the glass. Poor on aroma, perhaps some honey sweetness. Caramel malts in flavour with vague bitterness in the finish. Smooth (02.02.2007).

(bottle) Slightly hazy, copper colour with a medium-sized, lacing foamy off-white head. Light-sweet toast-malty, nutty aroma with shy herbal hops. Moderately bitter flavour, light bodied with a well carbonated mouthfeel. Good malty body, slightly fruity and nutty with notes of caramel and liquorice; dryish, fruity and malty, moderately bitter and slightly hoppy finish.

Bottle (660ml): Chestnut-amber coloured, medium-sized off-white foam; fruity, a bit dark-malty nose with a developing bitterness; light bodied, bitter, slightly sweetish flavour; bitter-fruity, almost a bit chocolatey finish. O.K., but not really well rounded........

Cask at the Penny Black, Bicester, 03-09-06. Standard brown colour, pretty much as the commercial description say’s bitter-sweet and a little fruity, there are some hops there but where I do disagree is that it isn’t that strong really, fine beer but nothing great.
