Established in 1882
Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move and the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened in March 2019.

Bottle from Lidl. The clear bottle takes away from the marketing as an old classic ale, let alone the potential effects on the beer. Clear amber, large frothy white head, good retention and lacing. Aroma of malts, caramel and red wild fruits. Its smooth, biscuit malts, moderate sweetness, a little caramel and fruit. Carbonation is soft. The finish is a moderate bitterness and spice note but then once receded you are left with a watery caramel note. The relatively light body is disappointing as it doesn't work with the rich flavour. Having said that it is quite tasty and I enjoyed.

Historical tick which I am adding as a rate so that I can see the impact it has on my stats. I think I had it in for this beer because a mate thought it was the 500 Beers To Try Before You Die tick when the gave it to me. But a pissy gold.

Bottle from my “cellar” – been there for years ! Aroma is toffee sweetness with some faint hops. Pours a dark amber with a vigorous off-white head. Creamy texture in the mouth but low carbonation. Flavours dominated by malt, but also nuts, caramel and some orange peel. A dry bitter finish at the end. Pleasant but unremarkable.

Bottle from Aldi Pours a very dark brown with a generous beige head that tends to linger. Sweet malts in the nose with hints of fruitiness. Some coffee in the mouth before it is swamped by damson fruit flavours, which remain in the finish. Nicely balanced – verging towards a stout rather than a mild.

Bottle from Ocado. A Protz 300 tick I initially had before joining Ratebeer. Roasty chocolate aroma with an unfortunate sour edge. Dark and glossy. Bubbly beige head fades. Light bitter coffee and chocolate with a sour berry edge. Some creamy coffee sweetness in the finish. Light-medium bodied. Thin. Average-fizzy carbonation. Dry finish. It's not too bad. A roastiness and bitterness I'd associate more with a Stout.
