Description
Emile Vanhonsebrouck and his wife Louise De Poorter founded the Sint Jozef brewery in Ingelmunster. In 1922 the brothers Paul and Ernest Van Honsebrouck take over the brewery from their mother. In 1953 Luc Van Honsebrouck (son of Paul) becomes director. Luc realizes that the small Sint Jozef brewery isn't able to compete with the large pils breweries. He therefore decides to concentrate on the production of an old brown beer, naming it Bacchus, and he changes the name of the brewery to Vanhonsebrouck. The St-Louis Gueuze and Kriek were officially launched in 1958. In 2009 Xavier Vanhonsebrouck succeeds his father Luc. In 2016 the doors of the old brewery in Ingelmunster are permanently closed. The new site in Emelgem is now home to a brand new, fully integrated brewery, with the equipment to produce all of the Vanhonsebrouck beers. In the meantime Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck becomes the new official name.

Bottle. A clear, dark red beer with a pinkish head of medium size. Almonds, sugar and cherries in the aroma and flavor. Too sweet, and the cherries are of the artificial kind. Sticky and sweet in the mouth, way to sticky all the way actually. Not the worst kriek, far from the best. Rating: 5-4-5-3-11-2.7. (080411)

Bottle. Murky red with a pink head. Sweet, cherryish nose with almonds. The same goes for the flavor, which is quite sugary. Sticky and sweet in the mouth, and a little sourness in the finish. Quite nice on a hot summer day, but not a session beer, for that it is too sweet. (070608)

Bottle, 375ml corked. A bit hazy, golden-orange, with a small, white head. Quite intense citrusy, sourish nose and flavor. Tart, astringent, medium mouthfeel, and a long, sour finish. Surprised me a bit this one, didn’t expect it this good. Pity all the bottles went down. (070526)

Clear golden colour, white lasting head. Fruity aroma, a bit spicy. Spicy flavors, but alcohol is very dominant. Bitter aftertase. Strong, but quite enjoyable.

Bottled, named Kasteel Rouge. Clear redbrown color, short off-white head. Aroma of cherries, some marzipan, not sweet sugary though. But aroma is of a cheap-ass kriek. Taste is very fruity of cherry, mild tart only, slight sweet, quite thick. Definitely not a lambic indeed, obvious fruit beer.

Pours a deep yellow colour with a neat, thin head. Aroma is quite musty with some yeastiness and malt. Carbonation is high with big gas bubbles flowing around the mouth inducing the fresh, slightly sweet malty flavour to the taste buds. Served cold this doesn’t feel like a strong beer. It’s clean and fresh enough to enjoy more than one.

Draft at the Happy Gnome as "Kasteel Rouge." Much like a St. Louis. The beer is red. Sweet cherry and sugar aroma, and a very sweet cherry and sugar flavor. One of the sweetest beers I have had in some time. It isn’t bad, but there is no complexity, no sourness.

bottled. Golden colour, not much head. Aroma is smooth sourness, apricot and some grassyness. Flavour is smooth, but sour apricot along with wood and some earthyness. Has aged enormously well.

Draft at the Beer Festival. Poured a hazy yellow color. Aroma is yeasty, malty, and has a very noticable alcohol presence. Flavor is much the same, with a sweetish/alcohol finish. I would suspect that’s not a supprise since it’s 11%.
