Sampled draught. Deep golden. Malty, balanced sweetness, bitter. Dangerously drinkable.

Burgundy. Rather malty, sweetish with a sourish edge. I like my red ales more acidic.

Looks black, but is actually very dark mahogany. Has a perfect 1 inch head when poured into a snifter (probably better than the regular Kasteel glass); Aroma features alcohol, dark malts, plums, a little bit of smoke (kind of like this smoked plum tea I bought in Chinatown once). The body is thick, but silky smooth, with a sweet palate of demerara sugar, vietnamese coffee, chocolate cake, and only a hint of alcohol or fruit. The finish is of sweet malts. This is big, but sure hides the alcohol well. You know its winter when you're drinking Bush Noel and Kasteel on consecutive nights.

Very dark brown - among the darkest of any Belgian ale I’ve seen. It tastes something of a very strong version of Chimay red - it has many of the same malt and estery notes, but a definite alcohol warming. Its strength is ultimately its downfall though, as it becomes difficult to enjoy more than a few sips. Rerate: MWBF 2006. I see I compared it to Chimay along time ago, and that comparison still seemed apt to me at the fest, as I noted a typical green apple and sourdough yeastiness in this one that reminded me of Chimay’s fermentation profile. Cloudy red-brown color. A bit too sweet, probably hard to finish more than the 4 oz pour. Some wafting alcohol in the finish burns slightly.
