Description
Emile Vanhonsebrouck and his wife Louise De Poorter founded the Sint Jozef brewery in Ingelmunster. In 1922 the brothers Paul and Ernest Van Honsebrouck take over the brewery from their mother. In 1953 Luc Van Honsebrouck (son of Paul) becomes director. Luc realizes that the small Sint Jozef brewery isn't able to compete with the large pils breweries. He therefore decides to concentrate on the production of an old brown beer, naming it Bacchus, and he changes the name of the brewery to Vanhonsebrouck. The St-Louis Gueuze and Kriek were officially launched in 1958. In 2009 Xavier Vanhonsebrouck succeeds his father Luc. In 2016 the doors of the old brewery in Ingelmunster are permanently closed. The new site in Emelgem is now home to a brand new, fully integrated brewery, with the equipment to produce all of the Vanhonsebrouck beers. In the meantime Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck becomes the new official name.

Shared by Badgerben. A new gueuze is always a treat. Sour barnyard and horseblanket aroma. The aroma is quite good. Flavor is definitely sour, but there is a little sugar, and it just isn’t sour enough. This is a good beer and approachable for the style.

Bottle picked up from Beers of Europe late April. Poured light amber in colour with a small white head, slightly acidic aroma but tempered somewhat, almost like when you are sweating off some cooking apples in a pan with a bit of dark sugar. Taste is a bit sweet for a gueuze, but pleasant enough some tangy appleness comes through again with an oakiness, enjoyable but nowhere near the best of this style.

(Bottle 25 cl) Pours a clear, dark amber I came to think of sherry - with an off-white head. Lightly tart, fuity nose with some Brett. Light and watery in body with fruity notes - not peach in particular - with both sweet and acidic notes. Almost Faro-like. Quite refreshing. 010507

A dark orange brown lambic with a thin off white head. Light aroma of chemical peach, inoffensive. In mouth, an ultra sweet lambic, with concentrated peach extract, which is saved by a good tartness. Medium bodied. Bieropholie import, BB Jan 2007.

375ml bottle. Dark pink body with bright pink head. Aroma is synthetic cherry – lots of it. Flavor is very sweet artificial cherry and almond. Not drinkable. This is an insult to a real kriek.

Bottle at the Hopdevil in Zagreb, as Kasteel Triple 11° Poured a nice murky golden colour with a tiny head that went away fast (too cold ?). The nose is initially nice, bubblegum, cloves, yeast, hints of banana, but ruined a bit by a noticable presence of alcohol. The taste is damn sweet, weak banana, lemon, grapefruit, yeast... parfumey, with a strong, warming alcohol assault, that carries into the bitterish aftertaste. It isn’t bad, and doesn’t feel as big as trainwreck as its dark brother did. This could really benefit by, say, losing two or three alc.% or just hiding it and gaining just a tad more carbonation.... that’d be a winner in my opinion. RIght now, it’s far from a great beer. Ah, well...

Special thanks to jjpm74 for hooking me up with this hard to find style. Poured a darkish copper color, with a big foaming head. Aroma was like sweet and sour sauce, with just a touch of leathery funk. Flavor started out with a lot of candy sweetness and sour, with a big sourdough yeastiness, leading into a balanced finish. Medium body and very drinkable.
