Description
Emile Vanhonsebrouck and his wife Louise De Poorter founded the Sint Jozef brewery in Ingelmunster. In 1922 the brothers Paul and Ernest Van Honsebrouck take over the brewery from their mother. In 1953 Luc Van Honsebrouck (son of Paul) becomes director. Luc realizes that the small Sint Jozef brewery isn't able to compete with the large pils breweries. He therefore decides to concentrate on the production of an old brown beer, naming it Bacchus, and he changes the name of the brewery to Vanhonsebrouck. The St-Louis Gueuze and Kriek were officially launched in 1958. In 2009 Xavier Vanhonsebrouck succeeds his father Luc. In 2016 the doors of the old brewery in Ingelmunster are permanently closed. The new site in Emelgem is now home to a brand new, fully integrated brewery, with the equipment to produce all of the Vanhonsebrouck beers. In the meantime Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck becomes the new official name.

Golden with a small head. Nice lacework. Sweet acohol-filled aroma. Somewhat fruity beginning but the alcohol takes over pretty soon. Bitter finish. Too strong for its own good.

(Bottle 33 cl) God this has an awful, cheap appearance - but fortunately it surprises in a good way. Opaque, almost black with a red glow and a reddish head. Pronounced cherry flavour, sweet and spicy but not artificial or cloying. Wonder what the base beer is for this. 060799

(Bottle 25 cl) Medium red with a dense almost greasy head. Fresh flavours with the cherries being very present. Although this has some sweetness it never cloys, actually I find this pleasantly dry although it’s a commercial Kriek. 010799

(Bottle 37,5 cl) Comes as "Brigand Christmas Beer" at 9% ABV. Fully golden beer with a decent, white head. Some sweet malt. Very potent and solid brew without much refinement. Alcohol is very evident. Almost malt liquorish. 220898

Copper coloured with a slight haze and medium head. Metallic barnyard aroma with a sugary background. Slightly sourish and VERY sweet. I’m glad it was only a 25 cl bottle.

Bottled 03/2004 37,5cl, corked (BB 05/2006)
Beautiful clear red color with a small creamy cherry head. Fresh cherries in the nose, no sourness or earthy notes. Medium-bodied. Cherries with some sweetness. Finish and aftertaste bring some sourness. Enjoyable kriek.

(Bottle 25 cl) Orange golden beer with a white, bubbly head. Very high on CO2. Peachy, perfumy nose. Pronounced peachy flavours. A soft lambic with a fine balance between the sour and the sweet. Rather quenching. 230598

(bottle) Dark red colour with a medium frothy pink head. Sweet and most of all sugary & artificial cherry aroma. Sweet and fruity taste of cherries but very unpleasant and too sweet.

[At Dr. Bill’s afterparty after GABF 2004 - 7 years old] An unclear dark red beer with no head. The aroma is sweet and dominated by cherries. The flavor is sweet with notes of cherries and wood and an extremely dry end. Lovely.
