Description
Emile Vanhonsebrouck and his wife Louise De Poorter founded the Sint Jozef brewery in Ingelmunster. In 1922 the brothers Paul and Ernest Van Honsebrouck take over the brewery from their mother. In 1953 Luc Van Honsebrouck (son of Paul) becomes director. Luc realizes that the small Sint Jozef brewery isn't able to compete with the large pils breweries. He therefore decides to concentrate on the production of an old brown beer, naming it Bacchus, and he changes the name of the brewery to Vanhonsebrouck. The St-Louis Gueuze and Kriek were officially launched in 1958. In 2009 Xavier Vanhonsebrouck succeeds his father Luc. In 2016 the doors of the old brewery in Ingelmunster are permanently closed. The new site in Emelgem is now home to a brand new, fully integrated brewery, with the equipment to produce all of the Vanhonsebrouck beers. In the meantime Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck becomes the new official name.

Red beer with a sizeable pink head. Aroma is dominated by raspberry but also includes wheat, yeast, and a barnyard quality. Raspberry in the flavor, as well as wheat. More sour than many fruit lambics, with a quick sour finish. Very nice.

Bottle: Reddish to brown coloured with a rose-coloured fluffy foam; cherries, almonds, some malts in the aroma, but shoe-polish also, kind of perfumed, artificial; cloying fruity taste; artificial ("chemical") finish, only very shy tart fruitiness in the aftertaste. Liquid bubble-gum, pretty sweet, pretty repulsive..........

Yeasy aroma that includes alcohol. Light and flowery. Good flavor, malt and yeast, flowers and light fruit. A delicate beer, better than the average triple.

Bottle: Poured a clear red colored beer with a small head that quickly disappeared. Aroma of oak is clearly present thought not has much as in other example such as Rodenbach. Taste is slightly tart with some nice touch of oak and very subtle cheery. Probably of the best effort from this brewery.

Bottle. Dense white head on top of a clear golden beer. Aroma is slightly sour, with spices, banana, citrus and yellow apples. Some alcohol as well. The taste is sweet, fruity and spiced, with hints of cellar and some alcohol. A quite nice medium-bodied beer with a warming mouthfeel and finish. The finish is spiced and with some fruits as well. Bottled (BB 05/2006)
Dark amber color, small off-white head. Sour, earthy, fruity nose. Thick sugary mouthfeel. Clear candy sugar presence with sourish vinegar notes. Sweetened oud bruin -like. Foamy mouthfeel in the finish. As faros often - not very enjoyable.

Initial aroma of dried fruit, malt, and only a little alcohol. It looks great; nearly black, with a thick head that leaves a thick lace on the glass. Flavor is primarily sweet. There is also malt, brown sugar, wine and cinnamon. Sinus clearing alcohol detracts slightly from the taste. Heavy.

Bottle dated May ’02, enjoyed 4/9/05. Light golden pour. Very fizzy, with a bit of a sweet honey smell. Taste is a sweet white wine, a touch of vanilla and a suggestion of oak. Just a little bitterness and then tartness with a sugary finish. I found this at Foremost Liquors, being closed out at $2.99. Why? They surely know Belgians stay pretty good as they age. Maybe because the labels were different from year to year. Another 2002 bottle, enjoyed 5/31/07. Just as nice as before. Just noting a bit of cork in the initial swig. I’ve had a previous bottle that went way too tart, but this is still nicely sweet, with a contrasting dry finish. Crazy world, huh? This had a different label that I hoped meant it was the Donkel, but it still says Golden on it. Last of my May 2003 .75 litre corked bottles. April 18, 2021. This has held up beautifully for its age, but I'm glad I finally got the courage to finish it off. Fruity and with fruit leather and pipe tobacco notes. A bit of oxidation, but it's still a delightful and complex drink after 18 years. Finish has lovely dry sherry notes. A great find from the cellar!

Blonde gueuze with a white head. Aroma of rubber and lactic acid. Sweet and chemical, with cigarette, like a vanilla nicorette! A drainpour. 2-2-1-2-3

Dark gold in colour with a lacing white head. Faint gueuzy aroma of lactic acid, not all unpleasant. In mouth, rather mild fruity taste, with little acidicic points, but thin and plain. Much better than the 250 mL bottles rated before. (375 mL corked bottle, LCBO Spring 2005). 6-3-6-2-10

Relatively fresh bottle from LCBO summer 2008, BB April 2009. Golden gueuze with thick darker off white head. Aroma is pleasant horseblanket and ground cherry, but in mouth, artificial sweetener overwhelms the palate. 7-3-4-3-8
