Description
The brewery was set up by former music teachers Steve and Christine Gibbs in 1994. The Durham Brewery produces a wide range of cask and bottle-conditioned ales. The brewery has a ten barrel plant but with a 20 barrel mash tun for the stronger ales, four 10-barrel fermenters and various conditioning tanks for bottled beer with a warm room for bottle conditioning. All production is onsite, including bottling, and it is company policy that there be no filtration and no pasteurisation. The brewery motto is “Perfected”. Despite all our years, this family owned brewery is still small, preferring to concentrate on perfecting beers rather than manufacturing volume.

From cask at Three Judges. Pours clear and golden orange with a small white head. Light alty and fruity aroma. Flavur is quit fruity. Marmelade like and light citrusy. Mild overripe note of fruit flavours. Mild caramel malt base too. Light bitternes into the finish. Mild spiced too.

Huge fluffy yellowish head, stable, over unclear orange beer with olive shine. Toasted, caramel nose, parsley, herbal-based liqueurs. Very liqueurish taste; syrup, alcohol & herbal bitterness. Very creamy MF from the head. Well-carbonated, slick & warming. Alcoholsweetness wars with the burning-bitterish throatfeel. Only medium bodied, all the same. Absolutely not bad, but for it to grapple with the big Belgian abbey ales, might be a bridge too far. Big thanks to Darren!

Cask, Bodega, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Pallid golden colour. Citrus hop aroma and flavour. Solid but unremarkable. Not the best effort from Durham.

Cask, 3.8% at GBBF08. OK dusty malt aroma. Almost clear golden colour. Good frothy white head. Thin mouthfeel. Grainy fruitiness, hint of dust. Quite boring.

Half pint shared with Geir at GBBF. Naked, shining amber body. Port-like aroma. Vinous and fruity with shades of sweet malts. Hints of alcohol beneath. Firm mouthfeel (hand-pulled cask, 09.08.2008).

Bottle, Beer Ritz, Leeds. Poured a deep cloudy golden amber colour, with a smallish white head. Fruity aroma with spicy yeast, malt and caramel notes. Smooth and very well balanced. Lovely grassy hop on the flavour balanced perfectly with the malt and fruit. Gently warming alcohol, not overpowering. Works really well. Lingering bitter finish. Yum. Really impressed by some of these Durham brews.
