Description
The brewery was set up by former music teachers Steve and Christine Gibbs in 1994. The Durham Brewery produces a wide range of cask and bottle-conditioned ales. The brewery has a ten barrel plant but with a 20 barrel mash tun for the stronger ales, four 10-barrel fermenters and various conditioning tanks for bottled beer with a warm room for bottle conditioning. All production is onsite, including bottling, and it is company policy that there be no filtration and no pasteurisation. The brewery motto is “Perfected”. Despite all our years, this family owned brewery is still small, preferring to concentrate on perfecting beers rather than manufacturing volume.

Bottle, Beer Ritz, Leeds. Attractive rich golden amber colour with a a smallish but lingering white head. Fragrant aroma of orange, spice and grassy hop. Full bodied. Softly sweet caramel/toffee with lovely fruit and spice mingling wonderfully in the flavour. Cracking balance. Straight outta the top drawer.

Cask, Beamish Mary, No Place, Co Durham. Very dark brown, near enough black with a thin biege head. Aroma was sweetish with roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Flavour was something similar. Solid and drinkable, but a little diappointing overall.

Bottle, Corks of Cotham, Bristol. Poured a reaperish black. Disappearing dark biege head. Like a glass of tar. Roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit and coffee aroma. Flavour was packed with more of the same. Some sweetness. Very rich yet soft and tidily balanced. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
