Description
The brewery was set up by former music teachers Steve and Christine Gibbs in 1994. The Durham Brewery produces a wide range of cask and bottle-conditioned ales. The brewery has a ten barrel plant but with a 20 barrel mash tun for the stronger ales, four 10-barrel fermenters and various conditioning tanks for bottled beer with a warm room for bottle conditioning. All production is onsite, including bottling, and it is company policy that there be no filtration and no pasteurisation. The brewery motto is “Perfected”. Despite all our years, this family owned brewery is still small, preferring to concentrate on perfecting beers rather than manufacturing volume.

Dark amber to chestnut color, with a thin head. The aroma is maybe too simple. The flavor is solid, a straight Bitter, with strong caramel flavor and strong bitterness; maybe not exciting, but back to basics.

50 cL bottle. Pours hazy brown with a chalk white head. Light hoppy aroma with a vague spice note. Flavour is quite spiced and with a hops note swept through the palate. Mild liqourice note mixed with dense caramel malt flavour and a spiced bitterness. Light liqourice into the far finish.

From cask at Three Judges. Pours golden deep amber to to brown with a small light tan head. Mild breadish and roasted malt aroma. Smooth and slight chocolate like. Vibrant caramelish dark flavoured with a light chocolate note and bit of liqourice. Light sweetness slowly appearing to an otherwise solid biter and roasted brew. Smooth roasted malty finish. Århus2008 50 cL bottle. Pours pitch black with a fizzy tan head leaving a nice little lacing on top of the beer. Coffee and hardroasted malt aroma. Flavour is sweet at first before a more roasted acidic malt note joins in and slowly take completely over with a set of nice acidic flavour hardroasted malt notes. Roasted and chocolate smoth finish. Nice one.

Test vom 28.3.2008, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 11,11,11,12,11,11 - 11,15

It has a beautiful dark amber color, with a thin persistent head. The aroma is mild. It’s full bodied, with a quite round mouthfeel, and a good caramel and malt flavor, and the sweetness level that I like; I mean, the body really makes you want more of it. The final is balanced between the caramel, the sweetness and the bitterness, with a pleasant alcohol warmth.
Said so, it’s far from being exciting. At times it has a slightly metallic aftertaste, and an impression of vegetables, so probably they can choose a different yeast…

Hazy golden color; big frothy head, persistent. Dubious aroma, with paper, wet soil, country fields and grass, glue; then grassy hops. Medium body strength, but quite dry mouthfeel; it has a dry toffee flavor that along with the strong bitterness creates the effect of liquorice, mainly at the end. Strongly hopped, but not impressive.

Tasted during an Imperial Stout Tasting evening with Casey, Traci and Loz 14-03-08, Poured very dark brown with light brown bubbles on the rim. This starts of with a liquorice assault with brandy snaps thrown in for good measure. Some cream soda on the nose, the alcohol was maybe just a bit harsh but it does soften with a creamy vanilla finish.
