In 1993 the company again renamed itself as the Rockies Brewing Company. In 2005, the company again changed its name back to the Boulder Beer Company.

Dark golden colour with a thin white head. Smells of hops (obviously) with high alpha acids and citrus such as grapefruit and lemons. Taste almost purely of hops, but not overwhelmingly so. Grapefruit lingers in the palate along with a slight hop bitterness. Balanced well with malt but no definate single malt characteristic shows through in the taste. Overall, a pretty good beer...the smell was more powerful than the taste, but the hops didn't kick quite enough for me, an avid hop-head! I bought this 22 ounce bottle from Total Beverage in Thornton (Denver), Colorado.

Clear amber in colour with almost no head. Sweet maltiness with some subtle yeastiness. Short flavour full of malt with a very subtle hoppiness. Once again, not my favourite style, but even this could be improved tremendously. I bought this 12 ounce bottle from Total Beverage in Thornton (Denver), Colorado.

I thought about starting this review by parodying the 1980's Wendy's commercial with "Where's the malt?", and I still might be do that, wait, it looks like I just did. Funny thing, I've read a few writers knock some of the hoppy ales out there as being over the top hoppy and wholly lacking any malt, although I myself had yet to try a beer truly lacking in malt, that is, until this one. Where's the malt?! Presented as a clear (not hazy) amber colored beer, thought it would be a rich IPA by looks and smell. Strong piney and resiny aroma, with citrus components. I've read of grapefruit juice beers, but that descriptor never really worked for me until now - this beer has all the body of fruit juice (read: nonexistent). It was like a piney tasting grapefruit juice, perhaps lightly sweetened. OK, so I can detect a hint of caramel malt, but thats it. Drying med-bitter finish.

Bright pale gold with white fading head (Bubbly and artificial looking). Light musty and bready aroma. No malt upfront, strong unpleasant bitterness wells up quickly. Lingering taste is a flat bitterness. Further analysis reveals a tinge of corn-like sweetness. Frankly, for an American Light, I'd just as soon have Miller Lite or Bud Light, and at half the price (not that I'd enjoy any of these three).

This is a rating for the Rockies Brewing Co contract version (bottle). Bright gold with a large white creamy head. Gentle hop aromas and light fruit make me think immediately of Kolsch - but the flavor takes another turn entirely. Slightly sour with light malt and medium non-descript hop presence. Unbalanced bitter finish, due to lacking malt. Clean overall and fairly drinkable.
