Description
The Brasserie d'Ecaussinnes was founded in 1999 by the Bruges couple Isabel & Hugues van Poucke. In 2012 the Chinese importer Xiaoning Yu bought the Brasserie d'Ecaussinnes from the Van Poucke's. Together with his friend and beer aficionado Michel Simon, he decided to invest in the former Brasserie d’Ecaussinnes. Substantive work was done to update the production and refresh the image of the brewery. In 2014, the introduction of a new team gave a young and modern dynamic to the brewery and the name was changed into Brasserie Scåssenes. In 2015, the brewery launched its own revolution….the 1830.

In 2020 after years of setbacks (the existing installations of the brewery turned out to be too old or too large; while co-investor Michel Simon left the firm) a new manager was appointed to put things in order. Brewmaster Jerôme, a medical biologist, keeps an eye on the fully automated brewing process.

Bottled. Hazy orange colour, big huge creamy off-white head. Aroma is nutty and quite toffeeish with some hints of malts. Flavour is nuts, sweet malts and some yeasty hints. A rather pleasant and refreshing thing.

Bottle picked up at The Little Beer Shop, Ludlow, Salop. Deep amber in colour with frothy head, aroma was sweet and malty, taste was also quite sweet, malty and fruity although there was little in the way of plums noticed in the taste which had a little sourness on the edge, if truth be known I rather liked this it was a very reasonable beer even if I didn’t get the plums or prunes.

(Bottle 33 cl) Warm, orangey brown with a creamy, beige head leaving some lacework. Sweet aroma of roasted malt and caramel. Full - but not overly so - body, especially considering the alcohol. Marked accents of roasted malt and brown sugar, yet it manages to end fairly dry without much bitterness. The alcohol is very well hidden. 100307

Bottle: Poured a dark brown/black with thin cream brown head. The aroma was fruit and liquorice. This tasted similiar with heavy liquorice reminded me of jagermeister!

Stubby bottle, best before 01/02/11 printed on cap, poured into a Leffe rounded goblet glass. Pours with a medium strong head and a muddy deep brown color, absolutely no clarity. Aroma is strong, dark sweet rye bread and liquified raisons. Aroma has a strong kvass like aroma but heavier and sweeter. Just an overall dark sweetness. Taste is also liquified bread sweetness. Very strong without going into the sweet tooth area. Works well with the nature of the beer. The great thing is it finishes rather light, refreshing, and dry with no bitterness. Body is heavy but off set by a slightly stronger carbonation that tingles the cheeks. Very surprised how nice this came out.

(Bottle 33 cl) Pours an almost clear amber with a dense and lasting, off-white head leaving laces. Sweetish aroma of caramel and malt. Full body with a heavy malt sweetness and distinct caramel notes. A surprising bitterness ensures that this doesn’t get too cloying. 080207

(Bottle 33 cl) Pours a hazy, deep golden with lots of impurities and a creamy, white head leaving laces. Aroma of fruit, alcohol and diacetyl. Solid body with a heavy alcohol presence and a high degree of sweetness. Soft, malty notes and a certain fruitiness. Almost no bitterness though. 040207

Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a ruby chestnut color with a huge brown head. The aroma was a savory mix of raisins and brown sugar. The flavor was tangy and sweet with elements of raisins, molasses, brown sugar and vague ripened fruits. The finish is fruity with a lingering malty molasses note. Very nice.
