(Bottle 33 cl) He’s back!!! The cute, little,fat, beer-drinking monk on the St. Idesbald labels. Golden, rather light in body, sweetish, pleasant and very easy to drink. The kind of beer that wouldn’t offend even the typical pils-drinker. Only here you get something a lot more interesting. 070996

Slightly irregular head, white with a pink hue, dense; pale coppery beer, bit veiled. Strange nose - in the sense of strangely attractive: fruit - specially peach - and, yes, English hops. Unfortunately, this lasts less than 1 min. Then coriander raises its ultra-ugly head, and the fruit becomes essence. Fruity taste, just too sweet and too perfumed. That coriander hangs around is not strange to this. There’s a point of acidity (citric acid like), that is not unappealing. Finishes rosewater-like. Bit fizzy, light, unpleasant sweet-slickness trailing behind. Better than most Floris. If the coriander were gummed, I might even like it.

(Bottle 33 cl) In this original version simply known as "Meesters Bier" at 7,5% ABV from Brouwerij Meesters in Galmaarden. Hazy, orangey golden with a huge, frothy head. Very complex, spiced aromas - some fruit. Very dry and refined. Somehow closer to a Saison than a Tripel. 150896 and as "Meesters Galmaarden Tripel" at 270798

Huge, very dense head, off-white and very persisting; dull amber beer. Alcohol, caramel - and apple. As caramelised apple in the oven, the cinnamon forgotten. A bit of vanilla instead. Sharp burnt/roasted taste, scorched caramel, Huyghe all over. The apple has been burnt, leaving a bit of acidity besides. Alcoholwarming, medium bodied, creamy, slick, burning sensation. Pff; the Duwac original didn’t gain prices neither.

(Bottle 33 cl) Comes as "St. Idesbald Triple". Another beer with the jolly little beer-drinking monk on the label (sorry, you miss this in the US Duinen-version). Orangey golden with a huge, pretty head. Somewhat herbal in its spices - tasty or tasteless - depending on your...taste. 070896

(Bottle 33 cl) Comes as "St. Idesbald Dubbel". Reddish brown with a nice head. Full-bodied and smooth, more dry than sweet. Some caramel and dried fruits in there. In no way unique but fairly classical for its type. 020896

(Bottle 33 cl) Looks like a gag in it’s white-paint bottle with a red/green hippopotamus on the label (!). But certainly doesn’t taste like a gag. Amber golden with lots of sediment. Lots of sweetish malt, almost sugary - but pleasantly accompanied by some late hoppiness. 270196

Huge amber-ochre head over red-brown clear beer. Very fruity nose, caramel and dark malts, dark fruit and candy sweets. Reasonably complex taste with dark malts, alcohol and fruity esters; roasted, even burnt notes, a bit like burnt straw or toast. Less sweet than the nose suggested. Warming up, unwelcome soupy wafts of coriander rise up. Dry, bit austere, empty MF. In the mass of bland to disgustingly sweet or alcoholic beers from Huyghe, some of the dark ones stand out favourably. This Poiluchette one tends to confirm that impression.

Heavily carbonated beer, gold to orange; huge, collapsing snow-white & slightly irregular head. Very fruity-estery nose, pineapple more exactly; white candi sugar and a bit grassy. Quite dry-alcoholic, yet sweet taste. Still some fruitiness but not longer identifyable. Slightly burning MF, quite dry. Not obnoxious, even reasonable. Which is probably a major victory for a Huyghe beer. Or am I becoming too intolerant?

Tasted as ’Ten Duinen Rousse’ Bright orange-amber beer; huge, fluffy off-white head. Absolutely nauseating mix of diacetyl and coriander. The two most hateful things in today’s brewing. Smells like someones’ armpits overdone with too much cheap deo. Coriander and caramalt taste; more coriander and less diacetyl (nearly gone in the taste). Finishes earthy-mouldy, disconcerting. Bit fiery MF, alcohol. Huyghe at its abysmal worst.
