Description
Terrapin Beer Co. was born when two brewers met while working together at a microbrewery in Atlanta. Spike and John felt they could make a contribution to the burgeoning Southeastern craft beer scene. Realizing that anyone could make another basic pale ale, brown ale, or stout, Spike and John set their sights on creating beers unlike any that were currently available in the Southeast.
Unique beers needed a unique location and what better place than Athens, GA? Home to the University of Georgia, Athens has a rich culture of music, food, classic Southern charm, and more than a little eclectic attitude. Spike and John knew from the start that the Classic City would be Terrapin’s home.
The guys introduced Terrapin’s first beer, Terrapin Rye, in April of 2002. While still available only on draft and only in downtown Athens, this sole offering won the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival. At only six months old, Terrapin had arrived in style!
History rolls forward and so too has Terrapin. These days John and Spike are enjoying Terrapin’s 40,000 square foot brewing facility, 100 BBL brewing system, and are taking full advantage of the space to continue bringing innovative and exciting brews to craft beer lovers. The brewery now has a portfolio of 5 year-round beers, 4 Seasonal Sessions beers, the Monster Beer Tour collection of high-gravity selections, and the Side Project series of one-time brewing improvisations, as well as several Special Releases and collaborations annually. Terrapin has developed a reputation for high-quality beers that push the boundaries of creative brewing and has garnered several awards both in the U.S.A and internationally.

Bottle. Pour is a clear gold with little head and aromas of honey malt with a touch of floral hops. Flavor is honey sweet with sidenotes of pear, apple and a little bit of citrus. It is not very interesting, but it is not bad, either. This is pleasant enough and goes down easy.

Bottle. Body is a very thin and transparent amber. Quite a bit of carbonation and a small sudsy head. Aromas are kind of weak... mostly a floral hops presence there, but a touch of citrus lurks quietly, too. Flavor is very nice and fairly bold. Just for a split second I thought I picked up the rye on the front edge of the first sip... it quickly got swallowed up in a wave of crisp hops. Pine and citrus hops are pleasant enough and the malt does a great job balancing things.

22oz bottle-pours a light tan head and amber color. Aroma is medium malt-some sweet, woody, smoky. Taste is smoky comes first then medium malt-some sweet, woody, rye, some hops balances a bit. OK effervescence.

Pours deep ruby red with light tan head. Aromas of grapefruit and toasted malts. Slightly sweet caramel malt flavor with some grapefruit hop bitterness and alcohol. Medium body with average carbonation. The malt profile definately dominated the falvors and the alcohol taste was a bit too much, but overall it was a decent brew.

Chewy Terrapin aroma with vaguely bright fruits. Hazy blonde. Crisp, bitter hops. Decent balance though it still has some of that Terrapin chewiness. The finish is off-dry and the bursting hop notes have more or less disappeared by this point.

Tap @ Mellow Mushroom Tampa. Pours brown/amber, with beige head. Aroma of oak with some awesome vanilla nose. Taste really captures the characteristics of the oak barrel with light hops. Notes of dark fruits with a thick mouthfeel while very smooth. The flavor has plenty of vanilla mixed with the oak. What a great experience. Terrapin just keeps on amazing us.

Rating #1900. Pours slightly hazy copper with gold edges and white head. The aroma is a load of fermented honey and honey like fusels. If your nose wades through the layers of honey there is a moment or two of wheat and sweet malts. The taste is similar to the nose with an upfront attack of honey, honey and then some honey too. But by midway a full tasty wheat note opens up creating almost a hefewezien sensation that makes me feel like I’m tasting banana too but I’m not sure that is really there. The wheat and honey combination creates a short banana character. As the finish approaches a welcome note of malt, ripe plums and ripe cherries well up to join the fading honey and solid wheat flavors as the experience is carried into the after taste. I love the way this beer finishes but I’m not wild about the way it starts. For a new brew at 11% ABV the alcohol is very well hidden. I’ve had 8% beers with bigger booze flaws. Personally I’d prefer a wheat forward brew rather than this honey forward one. I’m not so sure it will even out with age. I’ve gone down the big honey brew road before and years later my creation really never wavered or smoothed out. But hopefully this one will be different.

"Lemmie see, what’s there not to like about a good wheat beer? Lovely bright solar related label. I think that’s another thing about most wheat beers, they promote life and enjoying it., not death and destruction. Rarely do you see a dark lord wheat, saturation impaerial wheat stout or triple rude IPA wheat. Nice swirling wheat pour, hypnotizing. Gunky bottom goop, what fun. Slender lemony hints laced with sulfur olfactory. Tasty and refreshing. No terrible hops or malt bitterness, simply refreshing. All the natural attributes of real beer shine through. Friendly and enjoyable. Finish is a smooth as that spot on the upper section of your mate’s leg. I may say even a tad tart, straw hints. Creamy sociable carbonation. Enjoyability is certainly in the upper quantile. A cinch to like. The ending leaves you wanting more, could drink a few bottles of this. Spring water end of session. Lovely, overall for a lager lover. "
