Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Clear orange beer, small aery irregular off-white head, unstable, dissipates quickly. Aroma: acidic smell, infected impression, weird, little dirty, some cabbages. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: yuck, what is this beer? Very bad, rotting melons, really bad and unpleasant. Aftertaste: sweetish, really bad, soapy, bit lemony, sugary as well, big nope... something went horribly wrong here.

Bottle from Prik & Tik, Sijsele. Pours cloudy ochre with a big, collapsing, foamy, white head; lots of lacing. Aroma of cooked ham, bacon almost, burnt wood, smoked malt, green banana, yellow apple, olive oil, green tea. Taste is light fruity sweet, green banana mixed with apricot on a bready malty base, faintly umami even with a smoky accent & green olive, cooked ham & bacon peeping through; light grainy bitter then, grassy, faint spicy & herbal touch brings subtle notes of pepper & tea leaves. Dryish, grassy & peppery hoppy finish, slightly herbal, lingering smoke, tea & olive, hidden alcohol, only slightly warming & gin-like. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Unusual, smoky & herbal Tripel, but a bit too subtle.

Grey-tinted cream medium head, not very stable, over amber beer, well-carbonated. Malty nose, but also a sour aroma as from pickles or buttermilk, giving it a bit diary vector. Bitterish, hoppy & spicy, but with a solid malt backbone; caramel, herbs. Sour from the nose is hardly detectable in the flavour initially, but warming up, it reaffirms its presence. Spritzy carbonation, but the finish is not that lively; bit thinnish body. Not bad, but a tad nondescript.

Bottle from Boise Co-op . Opened without a pop. Flat pour. Cellared for 2.5 years. This bottle didn't hold up. Aroma is plums and raisins, some of the cognac. Taste goes down from here, a bit tart. Would have been great in its prime.
