Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

At Zythos 2017. Pours cloudy amber. Aroma is sweaty damp laundry, lightly citric. Body is medium, a weird uneven mix of competing bitterness and sweetness, a bit herbal, to a lively but low carbonation. Okay, besides the nose.

Thank you for sharing German speaking RB Crew! Sampled draft @ ZBF 2017. Very dark brown to black, tanned head. Nose is mocha, hazelnut, gravy, mocha powder, instant chocolate milk mix, some alcohol. Sherry is odd here, strangely boozy going towards varnish & plastic notes, not really integrated with cacao, mocha, dark bread, powdery chocolate, feels a bit raw, messy varnish notes, too young? Body is plastic, low varnish, cacao, not as thick as you would expect. Pleasant in general but not that sexy for a BA RIS.

Thank you for sharing German speaking RB Crew! Sampled 330 ml. bottle @ ZBF 2017. Hazy orange, little white head. Nose is nice juicy tropical mango, stone fruit, low bitter peel. Taste is bitter stone fruit, grass, low bitter yeast, lingering bitter grass, more grass than tropical fruity, not that juicy but a nice IPA. Slightly too yeasty. Awful name ’though.

Multiple serving versions on tap at Zythos festivals, including the Lapsang Souchong version.Hazy brown color with small head. Base aroma has coffee, brown sugar, and the regular quad aromas you expect, enhanced by a lot of smoked tea leafs for the Lapsang Souchong serving. Taste reflects the aroma quite well in both cases and there is always a nice balance to it. The carbonation is medium. I probably like the Lapsang Souchong version better, but both have their benefits!

At Zythos 2017. Pours unclear dark brown. Aroma is soy sauce, sweet malts, whisky barrel booze. Body is heavy, sweet, but not sticky, quite boozy but in harmony with the rest of the beer. Sweet palate. Good.
