Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

23/04/2017 @home - 33cl bottle from Malt Attacks. Red to rose with big creamy tanned head. Nose is some grains, lots of, lots of beetroot. Taste has some maltyness, beetroot juice, light sour touch, red fruit touch, some grains, earthy (as I would’ve expected from a beetroot). I was very keen on trying this, glad I found it by luck. It did live up somehow to my expectations, only feels sometimes a bit like beetrootjuice. But damn nice idea!

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt with light coffee notes is pleasant. Taste is a mix of caramelized malt with some residual candi sugar notes with some light floral coffee notes. Body is a bit light for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting mix with more drinkability then I was expecting.

Bottle thnx to Andy ! Story has it the beer wasn’t being sold day 2 of Zythos, since Andy wasn’t satisfied with how it came out to be. I am a fan of quality control and honesty in brewers, and thus I want to salute him for doing so. The fact he gave us a bottle - if what I heard is true, that is- must mean it’s a pure act of goodness. he’ll know we’ll rate a beer of him he isn’t completely happy with, yet still gives us the chance of trying it. Thnx for that, Andy ! Anyone reading should also bare in mind that - if all of the above is true - this score will be lower than what the beer should get, in ideal circumstances. Bottle. pours hazy, yeasty blonde. OK white head fades rather fast. Smell is rather weak, mild fruity aspect. Taste is decently bitter. Fruityness is very mild. Very malty though. I love this malt VS hazyhop creamyness VS decent bitterness. I can agree a beer with this name should be more fruiy, but I don’t mind drinkin this at all. decent mf, higher side of carbo. Not bad at all, yet perhaps a bit too subtile and hops, and a bit too overwhelming in yeast. IF this is a ’lesser batch’ it only proves how good the better batches will be.

330ml bottle (5.5%) @ 2be / beerwall, Bruges, consumed on the outside terrace on a nice late afternoon. Pours deep, lightly hazy brown, pale tan head. Sweet cocoa in the aroma, lightly earthy. Taste is more chocolate, lactose, earthy malts, fairly light bodied but just right for an afternoon beer. Good stuff.

Hazy amber beer, good cream colour head. Palate is light, dry and minerally crisp. Thin malts, sweetish, a little caramel. Mild mild orange hop, slightly ripe. Trace of pine. Light finish. Easy drinking but nowhere near hoppy enough.
