Bottle. Birthday present from Totnes. The person not the place. Surely this is Saltaire Triple Chocolate with a bit of new branding? Anyway it doesn’t matter because it’s dogshit. Horrible artificial tasting tripe that went down the sink.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a dark reddish-brown with minimal off-white head. There’s biscuits, figs and plums in the aroma. In the mouth it is quite sweet and juicy but with a little underlying sharpness. Flavour has malts, plums, biscuits and cola. Becomes a little watery after a while but sweetness lasts into the finish. This is reasonable if a little bland.

Last fully ordered beer on my York evening out, I did have a taster after this. Dark but not near black, Sticky and Sweet but not stated in its pumpkin character, a roasted character is still more dominant. The giant legume is represented, but is perhaps more a flavoured afterthought here. This is gritty in the roasted malt sense, and an acquired taste example for beer people.

Cask at Square Bottle, Chester. Pours golden yellow with a small foamy almost white head and good lacing. There’s a fairly weak aroma of citrus and lime. In the mouth it is sweet and smooth with flavour of hedge fruits and elderflower. A certain tanginess becomes evident later with hints of ginger and tangerine. Finish is slightly dry. This is eminently reasonable.

[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading.] A pale amber coloured pour with a ring of white head; floral aroma; sweet elderflower taste; and a sweet herbal finish with a lingering dry bitter aftertaste. Not my thing.

5/3/2026. Cask at wetherspoon’s beer festival. At the Bell Hotel, Norwich. This was served straight from cask. Pours fine. Sweet, flowery, herbal, grassy. Sweet clammy taste. A little unpleasant bitterness. Elderflower is one flavouring I’ve never got on with and this hasn’t changed my opinion.
