Description
Old Chimneys Brewery was started in 1995 by Alan Thomson, a Master Brewer who celebrated 40 years of brewing in 2017.
Located in Market Weston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Old Chimneys has achieved an enviable reputation for beer quality. The flagship brand,
Good King Henry Special Reserve, has for 8 years been the highest rated English beer on ratebeer.com
Alan ceased brewing at Market Weston in April 2019 to concentrate on collaborative brewing with top quality brewers in the UK and abroad,
starting with Grain (Norfolk), Northern Monk (Leeds) and Wylam (Newcastle).
The regular Good King Henry is now brewed under Alan’s supervision at Grain Brewery. The strength has been increased to 10% abv, and for the first time in 20 years it is available in KeyKeg as well as cask.
Changed to a client brewer as of 2019 on Brewver as Alan continues to brew elsewhere with the Old Chimneys name, mostly at Grain Brewery.

33cl bottle from CGarvieUK, which was admittedly a bit aged. Happy to give this a go. Pours a glowing ruby amber with some lightly lacing, white head. Nose has orange rind, some pine, honey, a little candy, some port. Flavor follows, a bit weak and a little cardboard, some mild port/brandy, honey, sticky pine, heavy dried citrus. Sticky finish.

33cl bottle pours a murky, brick red with some sudsy, off white head. Nose is zippy with booze and brandy, cherry, fruit cake, raisin. Flavor is interesting, a little fortified wine, brandy, light booze, bubblegum, cherry, candles. A little astringent on the finish.

Bottle (lot no 032, BBE 06.2017, 4.1%) from Old Chimney. It pours hazy amber with an orange hue and medium beige head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, rich wood, old leather sofa, caramel, toasted nut and a touch of orange marmalade. The taste is bitter, wood, twig, earth, dirt, leather, light spice and orange peel with a dry, earthy finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Decent enough bitter, but no game changer.

Bottle (lot 991, BBE: 04 2017, 3.9%), picked up at the brewery. It pours lightly hazy golden amber with a sturdy, medium white head. The aroma is fresh, fiery ginger, lemon zest, bread and cereal. The taste is crisp, bitter, spicy ginger, lemon, toasted grain, cereal, bread and soda water with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate, lively carbonation. Nice balance to it. Does what it says on the label and pretty well. Refreshing.

Bottle. Cotteridge. Very dark, cola brown. Thin, dense, lasting, tan head. Nose has fruit cake. Fruity yeast. Some chocolate truffle. Light roast. Some ripe pear. Taste is vine fruit sweet. Fairly dry. Light, roast bitterness. Medium body. Fair bit of vinous tang dries things out. Vinous, cakey sweet finish. Not a favourite style, but this drinks tasty and smooth.
