Description
Our story starts with four friends, a collective passion for better beer, and a garage. Brewing off a 20L rig consisting of a pot, a propane stand and a few glass fermenters, the 4 broad-headed (aka big noggined) fellas honed their skills. Feedback was so positive that thirst quickly outgrew supply and the idea of opening a commercial brewery was born.

With a fraction of the capital advised to take on a project of this magnitude, the founders banked on their engineering prowess to retrofit and repurpose equipment in combination with a whole lot of sweat equity and late nights. In the fall of 2011, Broadhead Brewery kicked its doors open to the public in Ottawa, Ontario.

Over the past decade, we’ve been fortunate enough to be able to live our dream and share that dream with our incredible team and amazing customers. While much has changed since the garage days, our strong work ethic holds true, we remain focused on crafting high quality beer that’s innovative yet approachable, while leveraging the backgrounds of our founders to conduct regular feats of engineering.

This ale poured a amber colour with a minimal head. Scents include vanilla, cream, perfume and rubber gloves. First swig was a little watery with flavours of malt, must and a little hop. Finish is slightly bitter with flavours of malt and old books lingering.

Pours a clean rich amber colour with a frothy warm cap, decent retention and lacing. Typical amber aroma with roasted malts, caramel, malts, grain and hops. The caramel does show a little more than most amber ales after breathing. It also shows up in the taste. Grainy finish with the mild hop lingering. Medium-bodied, so just a plain refreshing amber ale.

Not sure what version was on tap at the Ottawa beerfest so I will rate it here. It is a clear copper  with a soft wine like fruity aroma that has a spritzy medium body. The taste is fruity, lightly bitter with ok malt notes. It is midway between UK & US  pale ales. Less malty than in the UK but less hoppy than a US one. It’s an easy drinking beer. A bit spritzy witbier like.

Draft: Poured a lightly hazy orangey color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention. Aroma of light cereal notes with light dry hops notes and some light sweet notes. Taste is a light mix of residual sugars with some light hops notes and some cereal notes. Body is quite full with medium carbonation. Nothing too earth shattering here.

Sampled at the 2014 Winterbrewed Craft Beer Festival on Valentines’ Day. Poured a dark brown colour with a beige head and thick patchy lacing. Mostly chocolate aromas with soft vanilla over the roasted malt and hints of coffee. Medium-bodied with some stickiness. Taste of coffee and roasted malts with a little sourness. An easy drinking stout.
