Description
The story of Bear Republic, like most other craft brewers, begins with homebrewing. It was the spark for our passion to create quality, hand-crafted beers. We are a family-owned brewery, located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. The company was established by the Norgrove family in 1995, with Richard G. Norgrove as brewmaster.

After 11 years of rapid growth, we opened our Factory 5 brewery in Cloverdale, California, where we brew and package all our beer that goes to market. We hand select our ingredients for each batch, the grains and hops we use are chosen for their unique characteristics and the recipes and formulations are patiently developed over time. Many recipes start as a home-brew and then develop into the commercial beer available in many retail outlets today. We pride ourselves in using our established methods while always looking to improve efficiencies and techniques that allow us to provide quality beer to share with the world.

Beginning 2023 thw brewery was acquired by Drake’s Brewing.

Bottle Pours a deep dark brown with crimson edges and highlights. Vaery large foamy tan head. Aromas are malty and woody. Apples and nuts as well. Flavor is brown sugar, quite nutty and of dark malts. A slightly sweet metallic taste. Feel is smooth fairly lively and a bit thin with a finish that feels a bit chalky. After taste is a slightly bitter and woody again. Nice flavors and easy to drink despite the claimed 6.3 ABV. Probly my favorite Brown Ale.

Bottle. Dark brown with a touch of red underneath a big brownish head. Roasty, chocolatey aroma. Medium to medium light bodied. Roasty caramel malt flavor with a bit of chocolate. Easy to drink. Well put together.

Bottle Pours a clear quite dark amber/mahogany color with a very large fluffy light tan head that stays around. Thick sticky lacing long after the head begins to dissipate. The aromas are a soft medley of hops and dark malts. Subtle. Flavors are consistant. Not a very strong hops bite and plenty of rinch malt to balance, even keep at bay, the former. Some soft toasted grain notes can peek through. Palate is a very smooth and rich feel. After taste is where the bitter hops make a last stand to be heard. Appropriate bite at the end. A quite easy IPA and the 8% is hidden well.

Bottle Pours a nice clear dark golden amber with a modest but very persistant head of off white color. Plenty of creamy lacing. Fruity hops aroma, cantelopes, butterscotch, and mild citurs. Flavors are more of the citrusy kind, sharp, strong. Plenty of hop kick. The malts that balance seem light and sweet. The feel is very nice. Quite smooth. Long lasting mild bitter hop flavor as a trailer.

On Tap at Maxfields Potsdam, NY (of all places!). Deep red copper ale wit a pleasant fragrance of hops, resins, and ...strawberries! Pungeant and fragrant. Sweet malt, hop citrus, heavy hopped, with a lingering bitterness. rich and smooth mouthfeel, your mouth being kept awake the whole time of the pint.

Dark, dark brown coloured body with a thinnish light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, strong hazlenuts and a bit of coffee. Medium-bodied; Light malt flavour with a plentiful nutty character and some light sugars too. Aftertaste shows mostly malt and some nuts also. Overall, a not-so-great beer for a style that I already don’t care for. Good to try if you like browns-but it isn’t worth $4. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased at Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on 31-July-2004 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Bottled. Clear mahogany appearance, creamy head. Grapefruity aroma. Dominated by hops, but there’s plenty of soft, rich maltiness there as well. Lingering salty, very bitter finish. When it comes to malt character Bear Republic is one of my favourite American breweries!

Bottled. Ruby with beautiful rich, firm head. Lychee aroma. Sweet with solid, rounded malt profile and some salty licorice. Resiny salty, bitter finish. Another solid Bear Republic offering!

Bottle. Mahagony color with a big beige head. Roasted malt and citrus hop aroma. Very good and surprising hop flavor (citrus and some pine) combining wih roasted malt. A little plum fruitiness in the background. Smooth flavor that mostly works, but I can see I’d get tired of it.
