Description
The story of Bear Republic, like most other craft brewers, begins with homebrewing. It was the spark for our passion to create quality, hand-crafted beers. We are a family-owned brewery, located in the heart of Sonoma County, California. The company was established by the Norgrove family in 1995, with Richard G. Norgrove as brewmaster.

After 11 years of rapid growth, we opened our Factory 5 brewery in Cloverdale, California, where we brew and package all our beer that goes to market. We hand select our ingredients for each batch, the grains and hops we use are chosen for their unique characteristics and the recipes and formulations are patiently developed over time. Many recipes start as a home-brew and then develop into the commercial beer available in many retail outlets today. We pride ourselves in using our established methods while always looking to improve efficiencies and techniques that allow us to provide quality beer to share with the world.

Beginning 2023 thw brewery was acquired by Drake’s Brewing.

Draft. Dark amber with very little head. Grapefruit aroma and flavor with some smooth malt backing. Some tannins and grassiness present that may just be this batch, but it takes something away and means it’s nice, but could be better. One of my lower rated IIPA’s

22 oz. bottle, bought cold at University liquors, Normal, IL and boy was I worried about keeping it from boiling uin the car until I could get to taste it. Poured into a plastic motel cup. A big northwestern type of hop nose, with citrus, grapefruit and pine. Body is dark, more like a brown ale, but with that fluffy puppy IPA head. A big pale ale taste is tempered by rye: at once spicy like, well, rye bread, but soft and a bit creamy like an oatmeal stout. A bit peppery and zingy, too. Even as the acohol takes over in its heady fashion, it remains an immensely enjoyable drink.

Pitch black colour, completely opaque with a large brown head that lasts for a long while. Aroma of yeast, bread, coffee and a ton of roasted malt. Light to Medium-bodied; Sour lactic taste up front with some chocolate and coffee tastes following right behind. Malt is noticeable, but not the strongest in this beer. Aftertaste shows a bitter coffee flavour and some of the lactic quality. No real ’imperial’ taste in this one, just more of a sweet stout with a tad higher percentage abv. Overall, a decent beer, but not great enough to compare to most other impy stouts. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased over a year ago from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 20-February-2005 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

A hazy amber beer with a chocolate brown head. The aroma is very slight - what is there is of alcohol. The flavor is sweet malty and dry hoppy - simple but good.

Aroma is complex with powerful, earthy hops up front. Very light citrus, grass, and pine. Dark bronze color. Head is initially very large, and leavs a thick lace on the glass as it settles, with considerable foam remaining on top of the beer. Flavor is hops again, some mint and other herbs, candy sweetness, and an herbal dryness.
