Description

75 cl. bottle sampled @ Streekbierweekend 2014. thx! for sharing people. Hazy citrus, creamy white head. Sweet lemon, sugar, candy nose,..; Taste is candy, sweet sugar, banana, grain, light citrus, touch fruits,… Fizzy. Decent, I’m not crazy about this one.

Christmas ale with rocky, cream white head and very dark brown colour, almost blackish. Nicely perfumed nose of port wine, chocolate, madera, cherries, liquorice, medium dry sherry and tobacco leaves; sweet port-wine and chocolatey onset, candied fruits, tart accent drying the mouth, bit like an oud bruin, liquorice, vanilla, relatively complex finish, bit woody, softly spicy, some roasted bitterness and some warming alcohol. Their best so far, at least of the ones I have tasted.

One of Den Triest’s first, with light beige head and bronze colour. Aroma of dates, nutmeg, cacao powder, coffee touch; dryish taste on a chocolatey malt base with lightly toasted accent, mild hops in the finish but not really bitter, mouthfeel remarkably thin in relation to its strength. Way too heavy to be called a dubbel, this is more of a ’massive ale’, albeit not so massive as it should have been.

--- Rerate after some assumed mistakes in the original revieuw --- @ Zomerbierfestival 14 . Pours almost black . No foam . Smell is pure peat , so is the taste. Perhaps it is just me and my dislike of peat, but really, I could not taste any sign of the basebeer here . I can understand that a person who loves peat, will very much enjoy this beer ( good moutheel of beer , More easy drinkable and less ABV than the whisky on its own etc ) but in my opinion, balance is very lost . Compared to a Black mes by struise , for instance . Perhaps this beer deserves a full re-rate , after having tasted it again outside of a festival , and less fresh ( As I remember, this was so freshly removed from the barrel , it did not even have a label ) Maybe that had to do something with the balance being so gone ??? Keeping the original score for now, since I’m not re-tasting it ATM .

Little cloudy reddish brown beer, huge fizzy beige irregular head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: very spicy, caramel, bit metallic, dried fruits, some honey, bit oxidized. MF: lots and lots of carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of chocolate, bitter, some mocha, hoppy, bit of alcohol, some citrus, dried fruits, banana. Aftertaste: bitter, lots of banana. Nice dark Belgian ale.
