Description
The Obergärige Hausbrauerei Uerige (top-fermented craft brewery) is not a museum, but an exceedingly modern food business where a craft rich in centuries of tradition is carried out. It goes without saying that the Reinheitsgebot, or Purity Law dating from 1516, is still adhered to, because its results are good and lasting, relying, as it does, on nature as one of its main factors. Which is exactly what we do, too: our yummy droplet is made of nothing but water, barley, wheat malt, and our Uerige yeast.

Draught, in Düsseldorf at Zum Uerige, on March 13, 2010Cloudy dark yellow color, fluffy off-white head. Acidic, semi-sweet, a bit fruity taste. Some wet green apples aftertaste. Sweet fruity scent. Not really the characteristic banana esters I was expecting from the style. Medium to moussy mouthfeel, low bitterness.

Tap at Ginger Man NYC. Pours a slightly cloudy, dark, amber-brown with a moderate, off-white head. Deeply malty aroma, plenty of dark fruits such as raisin, date and fig, along with caramel and light chocolate. Flavor is nice and sweet, more fruit and an everpresent caramel character. Some hints of booze. A strong, medium body with average carbonation and lightly warming. As with other Uerige beers, this one finishes with a distinct dryness. Overall quite a nice beer.

Tap at Ginger Man NYC. Pours a lightly hazy red-brown with a medium, white head. Mostly malty nose, some caramel and fruits, some roast. Flavor is rather sweet up front, more caramel and perhaps pear and raisin, then gives way to a strong, earthy bitterness. Finishes extremely dry and bitter. Not bad.

Tap at Ginger Man. Pours amber with a soft, white head. Nose holds some earthy hops, along with hints of lightly toasted malts. Flavor is mildly sweet, with some caramel malts, along with some hints of fruit and earthiness. Medium in body and well carbonated. Finish is outrageously dry. An interesting - and pretty good - beer.

The bottle looks really, really good, nice format. Beer in the glass dark, almost black, small head. Malty aroma, a bit alcoholic. Starts strong-malty, a bit smoky, some notes of liqorice. Finish a little bit smoky, wonderful balanced and very drinkable. Warming aftertaste. Great beer!

Black lager tastes and feels generically "wet" with some mild hoppiness. Pretty bland overall. Rated 8/3/09

Bottled (from bierkompass.de). Deep rubyish amber colour, mediumsized brown head. Aroma is some caramel malts, crisp bisquits, some nuttyness as well as mildly toasted notes. Flavour is quite floral and grassy hops along with some earth and also mild notes of caramel and alcohol. Also some mild notes of fruityness. Also some mild chocolaty notes in the finish. A very nice strong Alt.
