Description
The Obergärige Hausbrauerei Uerige (top-fermented craft brewery) is not a museum, but an exceedingly modern food business where a craft rich in centuries of tradition is carried out. It goes without saying that the Reinheitsgebot, or Purity Law dating from 1516, is still adhered to, because its results are good and lasting, relying, as it does, on nature as one of its main factors. Which is exactly what we do, too: our yummy droplet is made of nothing but water, barley, wheat malt, and our Uerige yeast.

Maple syrup and malt aroma. Cloudy ochre, full of fine floating sediment, thin head. Tart initially but mellows to a nice woody flavor. Subtle tangy walnut finish. Little complexity, but distinct and very well done.

Churchkey, DC tap ($8): I never wanted to buy this in beer stores because it always seemed like they had a really old bottle of it, so when I saw it on tap, I couldn’t really pass it up. In any case, the pour was great: massive white head that lasts forever over a dark amber body. The aroma is of German hops, a little bit of grainy malt. The taste is rather bitter, in the same way that an English Bitter is, though obviously with a more German feel. The beer is not exceptionally full-bodied or full-flavored, but is still quite pleasant. I would say it is sessionable, but alas it is too expensive for that.

Brown beer with medium and beige head. Aroma has dark maltyness, fruitness and some syrup like sweetness, hint of chocolate and bananas. Taste is surprisingly quite fruitfull at the beginning, then malty, dry woodness and dry, slightly dusty aftertaste. Medium bodied and nice to drink. Aromatic, malty beer with enough of interesting nuancees, great aroma, nice beer.

330 mL swingtop bottle. Pours hazy deep caramel with a light tan head. Syrupy aroma with heavy molasses, bread, raisin, and dusty oxidative notes. Flavor has the molasses, crusty bread, and raisin, some iced tea, but there’s a lot of cardboardy oxidation going on. I can taste that this would probably be really great without the oxidation, but it’s just okay in this condition.
