Description
The Obergärige Hausbrauerei Uerige (top-fermented craft brewery) is not a museum, but an exceedingly modern food business where a craft rich in centuries of tradition is carried out. It goes without saying that the Reinheitsgebot, or Purity Law dating from 1516, is still adhered to, because its results are good and lasting, relying, as it does, on nature as one of its main factors. Which is exactly what we do, too: our yummy droplet is made of nothing but water, barley, wheat malt, and our Uerige yeast.

Big caramel aroma, slightly oxidized, dried plums, raisins, very rich, somewhat vineous. Dark brown with orange and bubbly lace. Rich, sweet, strong. Feels like more than 8.5%, with a very bitter finish. Fruitcake, raisins, caramel. Huge flavors, completely unrestrained. Bitter after burn lasts for ages. Interesting and exciting, though I dare say less perfect than its little brothers. Slightly overwhelming and unbalanced, yet still good.

Bottle from Mason’s Pub in Huntsville, AL. Pours a dark, opaque brown with a large tan head. The aroma is heavy roasted malts, toffee, pine tar, and light smokiness. The flavor is very sweet, with significant bitterness in the finish. The body is very heavy, and the mouth-feel is thick and sticky with a malt-like powdery texture. Overall, a superb beer. Very strong, almost overpowering, but still subtle.

Draught, Zum Uerige, Dusseldorf. Cloudy yellowish gold looks with a good sized white head. Fairly muted, gently fragrant nose. Flavour revealed notes of wheat, yeast and a bit of citrus. Dries out towards the finish .Slightly different from the normal examples of the style, and all the better for it. Enjoyable stuff.

From the wooden barrel, Zum Uerige, Dusseldorf. My first beer upon arrival in Ddorf and surely the best to pass my lips. Darkish copper colour, with a lingering tan head. Sweet malt in the aroma mingled with some grassy hop.Wonderfully clean, smooth and fresh, as you’d anticipate when drinking at the source. Dark fruit, nuts and malty notes in the taste leading to a terrific ballsy hop bitterness that dances on the palate and builds to a superb crescendo in the finish. A real treat with bitterness that lives long in the memory.

Bottle (bottled in January 2009). Nice Michael Jackson commercial description. I know that I have had this at least 4 or 5 times before; cannot believe that I haven’t rated it. Pours with a murky dark brown body and a small tan head that fades. Aroma is extremely vinous with notes of plums, caramel, dark fruits, tar, port, salt water toffee, wet hay, and pluots. Flavors of alcohol, caramel, plums, dark fruit, large bitterness, very vivid raisins on the mid palate, light salt, caramel, brandy and burnt flan. A great beer to pair with traditional strudel. Creamy carbonation. Long duration. A very good beer and one that has aged pretty well, and could go for another 6 months or so. Ironic to drink this two day’s after the traditional fall Sticke day.
